Call or Text (352) 722-5295Coolant on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The 6.7L Powerstroke runs two independent cooling loops, each with its own radiator, thermostat and degas bottle. The primary loop holds about 7.25 to 7.75 gallons and the secondary, low-temperature loop holds 2.0 gallons. Hot Shot's Secret puts total capacity on 2017-2020 trucks at 31.7 to 35.1 quarts. That's a lot of coolant for a full change, and both degas bottles need checking when you top off.
Which coolant is right
Here's the straight answer: the references disagree. Dieselhub lists Motorcraft Orange VC-3-B as a 50/50 mix, or the prediluted VC-3DIL-B, for every 6.7L model year. Hot Shot's Secret lists an extended-life yellow for 2017-2020. Your truck's underhood label and owner's guide settle it, along with the color already in the degas bottles. Whatever you find, never mix types. Changing to a different coolant is a drain-and-refill job on both loops, not a top-off.
What we carry
- Mishimoto Liquid Chill: pre-mixed coolant in yellow and purple, full-strength synthetic coolant, pre-mixed synthetic coolant, and the Liquid Chill radiator coolant additive.
- Hot Shot's Secret: one-gallon jugs of 150K Mile Extended Life Green, 150,000 Mile Heavy Duty Extended Life Yellow and 750,000 Mile Heavy Duty Ultra Long Life Red.
- Lucas Oil: 10640 Super Coolant.
Pre-mixed products save you measuring. Full-strength coolant lets you mix your own ratio, such as the 50/50 the Motorcraft spec calls for. Either way, choose the type and color that match what your truck already runs.
Fitment notes
Coolant isn't year-locked the way hard parts are, so most of these products aren't tied to a model-year range. The fit question here is chemistry, not truck: confirm the spec, match what's in the system, and buy enough to fill both loops if you're doing a full change.
Frequently asked questions
Can I top off with a different coolant than what's in the truck?
No. Never mix coolant types. Top off with the same type that's already in the degas bottles, or drain and refill both loops if you want to switch.
How much coolant does a full change take?
Plan on about 31.7 to 35.1 quarts across both loops on 2017-2020 trucks. The primary loop is roughly 7.25 to 7.75 gallons and the secondary loop is 2.0 gallons, so buy for both.
When is the coolant due on a 2017-2019 6.7L?
On the normal schedule, the first change comes at 105,000 miles or 6 years, then every 45,000 miles or 36 months after that. Severe-duty service moves the first change up to 60,000 miles or 2,400 hours.
