2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Fuel Sumps

Fuel tank sumps for 2015-2016 Ford Super Duty pickups with the 6.7L Powerstroke, for owners plumbing in an aftermarket lift pump. Keep this engine's weak spot in mind while you plan the job: the Bosch CP4.2 is lubricated by the fuel it moves, so a clean, steady supply out of the tank matters more here than on most trucks.

Fuel sumps on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

From the factory, fuel on the 6.7L Powerstroke leaves the tank for a frame-mounted Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module that holds the electric lift pump, a 10-micron primary filter and a water separator. A sump is not part of that factory setup. It is a fitting that mounts through the bottom of the tank and gives an aftermarket lift pump its own pickup at the low point, and some designs also bring return fuel back in through the same fitting. Tank size depends on wheelbase: Ford fit 26-gallon tanks to 137-, 142- and 156-inch-wheelbase diesel F-250 and F-350 trucks, and 37.5-gallon tanks to 158- and 172-inch wheelbases and every F-450.

Why supply matters on this engine

The CP4.2 high-pressure pump is fuel-lubricated, and running the tank low or out accelerates its wear. When a CP4.2 fails, its roller followers shed metal that can spread through the injectors, rails, lines, lift pump and tank. That is why the same guidance keeps coming up: do not run the tank low, add a lubricity additive at every fill, and let the lift pump run 5 to 10 seconds after the wait-to-start light before cranking. A sump does not change the CP4.2 itself. It is part of doing an aftermarket lift pump install properly.

What we carry

  • XDP MFG XD182 Fuel Tank Sump, a one-hole design.
  • XDP MFG XD243 Fuel Tank Sump, a one-hole design with a fuel return.
  • BD Diesel 1050330 Flow-Max Fuel Tank Sump.
  • G&R Diesel GRD00153 Bottom Sump with integrated return.

Pair your sump with a pump from our lift pump collection, and follow the lift pump maker's instructions for which sump style it expects.

Fitment notes

Every sump here goes in through the bottom of the tank, so the tank needs to be empty and the work kept clean; debris left inside is headed for your filters. Know your tank size and wheelbase, match the sump to your lift pump kit, and verify by VIN. If you would rather not cut into your own tank, we install what we sell.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sump on a 2015-2016 6.7L?

Not with the factory fuel system, which feeds the frame-mounted conditioning module and its electric lift pump. A sump comes into play when you add an aftermarket lift pump that wants its own draw point at the bottom of the tank. Check your lift pump's install instructions to see what it calls for.

What is the difference between a one-hole sump and one with a return?

A one-hole sump like the XDP XD182 gives the lift pump a supply pickup. Versions with a return, like the XDP XD243 and the G&R Diesel GRD00153, also route return fuel back into the tank through the same fitting. Pick the style your lift pump kit is plumbed for.

Does running the tank low really matter on this engine?

Yes. The CP4.2 is lubricated by the fuel it pumps, and running low or out of fuel accelerates its wear. Diesel Hub recommends never running the tank low and using a lubricity additive at every fill.
