Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel filtration on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford filters the fuel twice. The first stage is a 10-micron filter in the frame-mounted Diesel Fuel Conditioning Module, which also houses the electric lift pump and the water separator. The second stage is a 4-micron filter mounted on the driver side of the engine near the firewall. Both elements come together in the Motorcraft FD-4615 kit for 2011-2016 trucks. After that second filter, the CP4.2 raises the pressure to as much as 30,000 psi at the rails, so clean, dry fuel reaching the pump is what keeps the pump, rails and piezo injectors healthy. The rest of this engine's parts are on the Powerstroke hub.
What goes wrong
Most filtration trouble is neglect. Ford's interval is 22,500 miles in normal service, or 15,000 miles, 6 months or 600 hours in severe service, and running biodiesel counts as severe. Push past that and you can see low rail pressure codes, power loss or a water-in-fuel light. The hardware has a weak spot too: the plastic engine-mounted filter housing can crack with age and spray fuel onto the exhaust in the engine valley, a fire hazard. A diesel smell or wet fuel near the driver-side filter is your cue to look. And when the CP4.2 starts to fail, the metal it sheds shows up in the filter, which is why cutting open the old filter is worth a minute at every change.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a stock truck, the FD-4615 kit on schedule, a drained water separator and an inspected old filter cover the basics. Upgrades go two directions. Aftermarket lift pump and filtration systems, such as the FASS Titanium Signature Series and the Fleece PowerFlo kit, are the bigger step; FASS describes its systems as adding 2-micron filtration and air and vapor separation to reduce strain on the CP4. Protection kits go after the pump itself: the S&S CP4 Disaster Prevention Kit (CARB EO D-756-6) runs the pump's return through a 9-micron spin-on so a failing pump cannot contaminate the rails and tank. The S&S Fuel Leak Prevention Kit targets the plastic housing and return-fitting leak points.
What we carry
FASS Titanium Signature Series and Signature Series PLUS systems for 2011-2016 trucks, in standard and No-Drop versions, plus XWS3002 and XWS3002XL water separator filters, the PF3001XL particulate filter and FASS filter packs. AirDog Raptor 150GPH universal pumps, an air/fuel separation system, a low pressure indicator light, a water separator and replacement filters in 10-micron and 2-micron. Fleece Performance Engineering engine-mounted and under-bed filter assemblies, PowerFlo lift pump kits, fuel heater filter bases and adapter fittings, with the Donaldson P555095 replacement element. From SPE Motorsport: a top fuel filter manifold, the Billet Exo Filter 2.0 lid, a billet fuel drain valve and the Disaster Prevention 2.0 kit. Also here: the S&S Diesel Motorsport CP4 Disaster Prevention and Fuel Leak Prevention kits, the No Limit Fabrication CP4 bypass disaster kit, the XDP billet water-in-fuel drain plug, and Alliant Power fuel treatments. Browse all lift pumps for more supply-side options.
Fitment notes
The FD-4615 kit and the S&S leak-prevention kit are 2011-2016 parts; 2017 and later trucks use FD-4625AA and a different engine-mounted housing, so do not cross-shop between them. Fleece PowerFlo kits come in separate long-bed and short-bed versions, so know your box length. AirDog Raptor pumps are listed as universal, so confirm mounting and plumbing for your truck before you order. The Alliant AP63527 transfer pump in this collection is listed for 2012-2015, which leaves out 2016 trucks. When in doubt, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How often do I change the fuel filters on a 2015-2016 6.7L Powerstroke?
Ford's interval is 22,500 miles in normal service. In severe service, or if you run biodiesel, change them every 15,000 miles, 6 months or 600 hours. The FD-4615 kit replaces both the frame-mounted primary and the engine-mounted secondary.
What am I looking for when I cut open the old filter?
Metallic debris. On this engine it is the earliest warning that the CP4.2 is shedding metal, and failures otherwise tend to arrive with little warning. One NHTSA owner complaint on a 2016 F-350 describes metal shavings found in the filter at 71,234 miles. If you find metal, call us before you drive further, because that debris is headed for the rails and injectors.
Do I need an aftermarket lift pump on this truck?
Not to make it run. Ford already feeds the CP4.2 with an electric lift pump in the frame module, which Diesel Hub considers better at resisting fuel starvation than the internal gear pump on a Duramax. Owners add a FASS, AirDog or Fleece system for extra filtration and air separation as added protection for the pump.
Does biodiesel change anything?
Yes. Ford allows up to B20, and running biodiesel puts you on the severe-service filter interval. Ford's own 2024 CP4 analysis also blamed aged biodiesel deposits in the pump's roller parts, so fresh fuel and current filters matter more if you run blends.
