Call or Text (352) 722-5295Radiators on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
This Powerstroke carries two radiators because it runs two cooling loops. The primary radiator serves the high-temp loop: engine, oil cooler, water-cooled turbo, heater core and, from 2015, both EGR-cooler circuits. The secondary radiator is a separate, smaller core for the low-temp loop, which cools the air-to-water charge-air cooler in the valley, the fuel cooler and the transmission cooler. There is no front-mount air-to-air intercooler on this engine, so intercooler parts for this truck mean the valley core and the secondary loop that cools it.
What fails and why
The factory primary radiator uses plastic end tanks, and diesel heat and pressure cycling wear on them. Over time the tanks degrade and the crimps that hold them to the core let go. Look for coolant seeping at the tank seams, a low primary degas level, a sweet smell, or overheating when you tow. It is an age and heat-cycle problem rather than a set-mileage one. Old or mixed coolant adds its own trouble: corrosion and clogged EGR cooler and charge-air cooler passages.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a truck that sees light duty, a direct-fit replacement puts it back to stock: the CSF 3601 primary or CSF 3602 secondary, Mishimoto's R13230 replacement primary, or XDP's Xtra Cool direct-fit main and secondary radiators. For regular towing or summer heat, an all-aluminum radiator takes the plastic tanks out of the picture. Mishimoto offers an aluminum primary (MMRAD-F2D-11V2) and an aluminum secondary (MMRAD-F2D-11S). If both cores need attention, Mishimoto's radiator and intercooler heavy-duty bundle groups parts together; read the listing for exactly which cores are included.
What we carry
- Mishimoto: aluminum primary and secondary radiators, the R13230 replacement primary radiator, the radiator and intercooler heavy-duty bundle and the MMUS-F2D-11M upper support bar.
- XDP: XD291 Xtra Cool direct-fit main radiator and XD299 Xtra Cool direct-fit secondary radiator.
- CSF: 3601 primary and 3602 secondary OEM-style replacement radiators.
- Mahle: C32248 upper radiator coolant hose seal O-ring.
Fitment notes
These radiators are catalogued 2011-2016 as one range, but Ford changed the EGR-cooler coolant plumbing for 2015. Before you order for a 2015 or 2016, confirm the hose and quick-disconnect routing matches your truck. Primary and secondary cores are not interchangeable. Many cooling parts changed at the 2017 redesign, so don't cross-shop a 2017 radiator. If you're not sure, verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the primary or the secondary radiator?
If the leak or overheating is on the engine side, start with the primary. The secondary radiator serves the charge-air cooler, fuel cooler and transmission cooler. Each loop has its own degas bottle, so the one that keeps dropping points you to the loop with the leak.
How can I tell my factory radiator is failing?
Look for coolant seeping at the plastic tank seams, a primary degas level that keeps dropping, a sweet coolant smell, or overheating when towing. Those point to the tanks or the core-to-tank crimps letting go.
Will a radiator listed 2011-2016 fit my 2015?
The radiators here are catalogued for 2011-2016, but EGR-cooler plumbing changed for 2015. Check the hose and quick-disconnect routing on your truck against the listing before you order, or call and we'll help you confirm it.
