2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke Tools

Tools and shop gear listed for the 2008-2010 Ford F-250 and F-350 Super Duty with the 6.4L Powerstroke: thread chasers, track bar bushing tools, a boost tester, grease and air-line tools, a tool tray and steel work benches. Know this about the engine: its well-known jobs are tight work. Up-pipe replacement calls for half-moon wrenches and a precise torque sequence, and cab removal is heavily recommended.

Tools for the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke

The 6.4L Powerstroke is a 90-degree V8 with a cast-iron block and bed plate, cast-iron four-valve heads held down by M16 head bolts, two BorgWarner turbos plumbed in series, and high-pressure common-rail injection fed by a Siemens VDO K16 pump. Add cooled EGR with two coolers in series, plus a DOC and DPF in the exhaust. Every one of those systems has its own service jobs, and those jobs decide what belongs in your toolbox. Some of what's on this page is everyday shop gear that makes any heavy-truck job go smoother. Some of it is built for specific work on Ford's diesel Super Duty trucks.

The jobs that set your tool list

Up-pipes. The pipes that carry exhaust from the manifolds up to the high-pressure turbo use accordion-style bellows, and those bellows are a known crack point. Replacing them means half-moon wrenches in very tight spaces and a precise torque sequence, and cab removal is heavily recommended.

Fuel rail pressure codes. Diagnosing a P0087 on the 6.4L follows a seven-step sequence that needs rail-pressure monitoring and injector return-flow testing. Working through it in order keeps you from buying fuel parts on a guess.

Front end. 2008-2010 Super Dutys are known for death wobble: a violent front-end shake on solid-axle trucks, set off by a bump when steering or track-bar parts are worn or caster is short. When track bar bushings are part of the fix, a dedicated removal tool is built for that press-out job.

Everyday shop gear vs. job-specific tools

Split your tool buying the way a shop does. Everyday gear earns its keep on every job: a right angle grease gun adapter for fittings you can't reach straight on, a quick disconnect tool kit, a hose cutter for clean air-line cuts, a tray to keep fasteners in one place, and a solid bench to work on. Job-specific tools earn their spot on one task, and on that task they save you from doing it twice. On a 6.4L, the track bar bushing tools and the boost tester fall in that second group.

What we carry

  • XDP thread cleaning chasers in M16x2.0 (XD40127TC), M12x1.5 (XD40124TC), M12x1.75 (XD40125TC) and M8x1.25 (XD40128TC)
  • SPE Motorsport track bar bushing removal tool (S200115) and track bar bushing and removal tool kit (S200116), listed for 2005-2025 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks
  • Calibrated Power Solutions Stealth Boost Tester HD Regulator, plus an inlet adapter for S300, S400, S400R and S500 turbos
  • Merchant Automotive right angle grease gun adapter (10514) and quick disconnect tool kit (37000)
  • Air Lift air line hose cutter (10530)
  • S&B flexible silicone tool tray (80-1000)
  • Wehrli Custom Fabrication modular steel work benches in 32 x 48, 32 x 72 and 32 x 90 inch sizes

Fitment notes

Most of these tools aren't truck-specific, so fitment is about the job rather than the VIN. A few need a closer look. The SPE track bar tools are listed for 2005-2025 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks. The boost tester inlet adapter is sized for S300, S400, S400R and S500 turbo inlets. A stock 6.4L runs a 65 mm fixed-geometry low-pressure turbo feeding a 52 mm variable-geometry high-pressure turbo, so check the adapter against the turbo actually on your truck. Thread chasers have to match both diameter and pitch, so confirm the spec in your service information before you run one into a hole. For the benches, measure your floor space first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really have to pull the cab to replace up-pipes on a 6.4L?

Cab removal is heavily recommended. The job calls for half-moon wrenches in very tight spaces and a precise torque sequence, and the cab-off route gives you the access to do both properly. If that's more than you want to take on at home, call the shop.

My 6.4L has a P0087 code. What do I need to diagnose it?

Plan on rail-pressure monitoring and injector return-flow testing. The P0087 diagnosis on this engine follows a seven-step sequence that uses both. If you don't have that equipment, call us before you start buying fuel parts.

Why would I need a track bar bushing tool?

2008-2010 Super Dutys are known for death wobble, and worn steering and track-bar parts are one of the triggers. SPE Motorsport offers the removal tool on its own (S200115) or as a kit with the track bar bushing (S200116), both listed for 6.0L, 6.4L and 6.7L Powerstroke trucks.

What does a boost tester tell me on this engine?

It pressurizes the intake side with the engine off so you can find leaks. The 6.4L makes roughly 40-42 psi of stock boost through two turbos and an air-to-air intercooler, so there's a long charge-air path to check. The Calibrated Power Solutions HD regulator controls the test pressure, and the inlet adapter fits S300, S400, S400R and S500 turbo inlets.

Are the thread chasers sized for head bolts?

The 6.4L uses M16 head bolts, four per cylinder, and the XDP lineup here includes an M16x2.0 chaser along with M12 and M8 sizes. Confirm the pitch in your service information before you use one. A chaser cleans up existing threads; it isn't meant to cut new ones.
