Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel tank sumps on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
On a stock 6.4L Powerstroke, fuel leaves the tank and goes to the HFCM on the frame rail, which holds the electric lift pump, the 10-micron primary filter and the water separator. That pump regulates to about 24 psi and feeds the Siemens K16 high-pressure pump. A sump comes into the picture when you move to an aftermarket lift pump. It is a generic tank-mounted pickup used to draw fuel for that pump, and the sumps on this page are not 6.4L-specific parts. That means fitment comes from your tank and your pump, not from the engine.
What fails and why
No 6.4L-specific sump failure is documented in the sources we work from. The documented risk sits downstream. The K16 has no internal bypass and depends on clean fuel, and a lift pump that cannot keep up is a listed trigger for its failure. Water that slips past a clogged separator drain reaches the K16 and the injectors. When you change how the truck draws fuel from the tank, you are changing the start of that supply chain, so plan the whole system rather than one part.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Sumps are add-ons for aftermarket lift pumps, so there is no factory sump to replace. If you are keeping the factory HFCM, nothing on this page is required; keep draining the separator every one to two weeks and changing both filters on schedule. If you are moving to an aftermarket lift-pump and filtration system, which adds finer filtration and water separation ahead of the K16, a sump is one way to feed it. Fitment notes
Because these sumps are generic, their titles do not carry a model year. Fitment depends on your tank, your lift pump and your fuel lines. Read your lift pump's install instructions for what it expects at the tank end. If your setup returns fuel to the tank, the XD243 and the G&R GRD00153 list a return built into the sump; check the product pages for the others. Use the fitment checker, and call us with your pump model if you are unsure.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sump to run an aftermarket lift pump on my 6.4L?
It depends on how your pump kit is designed to draw fuel. A sump is one way to feed an aftermarket pump from the tank, not a requirement of the 6.4L itself. Check your pump's install instructions, or call us with the pump you plan to run and we will walk through what it needs.
What is the difference between a one-hole sump and one with a return?
Going by the titles, the XDP XD182 is a one-hole design, while the XDP XD243 and the G&R Diesel GRD00153 add a fuel return built into the sump. If your lift pump system sends return fuel back to the tank, a sump with a return gives that line a place to land.
Are fuel tank sumps a known problem on the 6.4L Powerstroke?
No 6.4L-specific sump problem is documented. The fuel-system failures that are documented on this engine involve water and debris reaching the K16 and the injectors, which is why any change to fuel supply deserves a careful install.
