Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel filtration on the 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke
Ford split filtration on the 6.4L Powerstroke into two stages. The primary is a 10-micron element inside the HFCM, the horizontal fuel conditioning module on the driver-side frame rail. That housing also holds the electric lift pump, the water separator and its quarter-turn drain, the water-in-fuel sensor, and a thermo recirculation module that routes return fuel back into the filter below 80 F and is fully open at 50 F. The pump regulator holds about 24 psi at the inlet of the second stage, a finer filter mounted on the engine. The factory service kit is Motorcraft FD-4617 (Ford 8C3Z-9N184-C), and the caps are 3C3Z-9G270-A on the HFCM and 8C3Z-9C165-A on the engine. The current HFCM assembly is Ford 9C3Z-9G282-A (Motorcraft PFB-117), which superseded 8C3Z-9G282-A and PFB-95.
What fails and why
The HFCM drain is the weak spot. Water and diesel coagulate into a white, grease-like sludge that plugs the quarter-turn drain, and once it is plugged, water rides through to the K16 and the piezo injectors. You'll see water-in-fuel warnings, rust in the fuel system and hard starts, and later a P2269 code. The plastic HFCM housing can crack and its electrical elements can fail, which shows up as a fuel leak at the frame rail, water-in-fuel warnings and hard starting. The lift pump inside the module matters just as much: a failing lift pump starves the K16 and is a listed trigger for pump failure.
One more check before you replace anything. A white crystalline residue in the filter bowl, as opposed to sludge, points to diesel exhaust fluid in the fuel. If you find it, the entire fuel system is condemned, not just the filters.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
Factory-style filters changed on schedule are the baseline: every 20,000 miles or 24 months under normal use, every 10,000 miles or 400 hours under severe use. Ford's schedule treats any biodiesel use as severe duty, so confirm the blend limit in your owner's guide. Torque the HFCM cap to about 19 ft-lb and the engine cap to about 125 in-lb, then cycle the key three to five times to prime before starting. Drain the separator every one to two weeks; that habit is the single most effective protection the K16 has. A direct replacement HFCM makes sense when the housing is cracked or the module has failed and you want the factory layout back. If you want more margin, aftermarket lift pump and filtration systems add finer filtration and water separation ahead of the K16, and AirDog and FASS are the documented upgrades for this truck.

Fitment notes
Aftermarket systems are listed by engine and model year, so match the listing to a 2008-2010 6.4L. Replacement filters, water separators and Raptor pumps have to match the system you already run, so check the part number against your AirDog or FASS model before you order. Read the year and engine range in every title; some filter kits in the Power Stroke lineup are listed for other years and engines. Then verify by VIN with the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
How often do I change the fuel filters on a 6.4L?
Every 20,000 miles or 24 months under normal use, and every 10,000 miles or 400 hours under severe duty, which includes any biodiesel use. Change both filters together. After the change, cycle the key three to five times to prime the system before you start the engine.
What is the white stuff in my HFCM?
It depends on what it looks like. A white, grease-like sludge is water and diesel coagulating, and it plugs the drain so water gets through to the K16. A white crystalline residue in the filter bowl is a different problem: it points to diesel exhaust fluid in the fuel, and if you find it the whole system is condemned. Call before you buy parts.
Do I need an aftermarket lift pump on my 6.4L?
Start with the basics. Draining the factory separator every one to two weeks and changing both filters on schedule is the single most effective K16 insurance. An AirDog or FASS system adds finer filtration and water separation ahead of the K16 on top of that. Supply health matters on this engine because a failing lift pump starves the K16 and is a listed trigger for its failure.
What part number is the current factory HFCM?
Ford 9C3Z-9G282-A, sold as Motorcraft PFB-117. It superseded the earlier 8C3Z-9G282-A and PFB-95. If you would rather keep the factory layout with an aftermarket-sourced module, the Alliant Power AP63450 is the replacement HFCM in this collection.
