The 6.4L holds 15.0 quarts with the filter. Ford specified the Motorcraft FL-2016 filter and API CJ-4 oil. Unfiltered oil runs through the oil cooler first, then the filter base. The cooler bypass opens at 25 psi differential and the filter bypass at 27 psi. Filtered oil feeds both oil galleries, the turbo supply and the EOT and EOP sensors, and a drain valve in the filter base empties the housing when you loosen the cap. Viscosity follows temperature: 15W-40 above 20 F, 10W-30 from 0 to 50 F, and 5W-40 above -20 F. Shop the full Ford diesel lineup from our Powerstroke collection.
What fails and why
Two problems define this system. The first is fuel dilution. Fuel from regeneration cycles and from leaking piezo injector bodies ends up in the crankcase. The rockers get their only oil through the pushrods, so thin oil chews up rocker tips and bridge balls, and it damages the hydraulic lifters. The second is the oil cooler, which sits ahead of the filter. It plugs with casting sand, coolant sludge and breakdown products, restricting coolant to the EGR coolers and pushing oil temperature up. Expect a check engine light, engine de-rate and higher oil temps. There is no reliable first-failure mileage, and replacement OEM-style coolers are reported to last roughly 50,000-75,000 miles.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For the oil itself, the fix is maintenance. Ford's normal interval was 10,000 miles or six months, but the shop consensus is 5,000 miles because of dilution. Check the dipstick weekly, and change the oil right away if the level climbs past the max mark. For the cooler, you can stay stock-style with the Dorman 904-258 or the Alliant Power AP63468 kit, or step up to the Mishimoto replacement cooler or the PPE heavy-duty cooler and gasket kit, the upgrade path cited for this engine. Whichever cooler you pick, replace the mounting gaskets with it.
What we carry
Engine oil comes from Hot Shot's Secret, including Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond Outlaw CK-4 oils and ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils, and from Lucas Oil, including 15W-40 and 10W-30 CK-4 oils and Magnum High TBN 15W-40 CI-4. Additives include Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer and TB Zinc Plus break-in additive, Hot Shot's TBN Booster, FR3 Friction Reducer and Stiction Eliminator, and XDP X-Factor. MAHLE supplies the OX783D oil filter, oil pan gaskets and the GS33565 oil cooler mounting kit. Oil coolers come from Dorman, Alliant Power (AP63468 cooler kit and AP0041 installation kit), PPE and Mishimoto. Dorman also has an oil pan and dipstick, Alliant Power has the oil pressure sensor, Mishimoto has a magnetic drain plug, and there are parts from G&R Diesel and ATS Diesel Performance.
Fitment notes
The oils and additives are not engine-specific, so pick the grade from the 6.4L temperature chart above. Lighter grades in this collection, such as 0W-20 and 5W-20, are not on that chart. The oil pan, the side-rail and lower pan gaskets and the MAHLE filter are listed for both the 6.0L and 6.4L, while the oil coolers, cooler mounting and installation kits, the dipstick and the MAHLE OS32352 pan gasket are listed for 2008-2010 6.4L only. Verify by VIN if you are unsure.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a 6.4L Powerstroke take?
15.0 quarts with the filter. With the gallon jugs on this page, four jugs cover a change with a little left for top-off. Ford's filter was the Motorcraft FL-2016, and the MAHLE OX783D in this collection is listed for 2003-2010 6.0L and 6.4L.
Why is the oil level rising on my 6.4L?
Fuel is getting into the crankcase, from regeneration cycles or from a leaking piezo injector body. Change the oil right away if the level is above the max mark, and keep checking weekly. If it keeps climbing quickly between changes, have the injectors checked.
Should I upgrade the oil cooler on my 6.4L?
If yours is plugged, the Mishimoto and PPE coolers here are the cited upgrade path. Replacement OEM-style coolers are reported to last roughly 50,000-75,000 miles. MAHLE's GS33565 mounting kit and the Alliant Power AP0041 installation kit are here for the install.
What oil weight should I run in Florida?
The 6.4L chart calls for 15W-40 above 20 F, so in Florida heat 15W-40 covers you all year. 5W-40, rated down to -20 F, also fits the chart.
