2007.5-2010 Chevy Duramax LMM Transmissions & Parts

Every 2007.5-2010 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD built with the LMM Duramax left the plant behind one transmission, the Allison 1000 six-speed, and nothing else was offered with that engine in these pickups. This page is the Allison: the parts that wear out on a stock truck, the parts that give up once power goes up, and the order we fix them in.

The Allison 1000 six-speed on the 2007.5-2010 Silverado HD

The six-speed, double-overdrive Allison 1000 arrived for 2006 and brought driver-selectable manual gear control with it, and it is what sits behind every LMM Duramax pickup. Gearing runs 3.094 in first, then 1.809, 1.406, a 1.00 direct fourth, and 0.711 and 0.614 in the two overdrives. The factory behavior you already use is part of the package: Tow/Haul, Tap-Up/Tap-Down manual mode, auto grade braking and shift stabilization, plus an auxiliary external heavy-duty transmission oil cooler as standard HD equipment. Fluid is Dexron-VI, the 2006-2010 sump filter is the TF920 and the spin-on is the TF950, also sold as Allison 29539579. Input torque rating climbed across the run: 650 lb-ft for 2006-2007, 660 lb-ft for 2008-2009, and 765 lb-ft from 2010 forward. If your HD is the 6.0L gas truck instead, it has a Hydra-Matic 6L90 and none of this interchanges.

What fails and why

The failure that catches low-mileage trucks is the transmission cooler lines. They leak where the hose is crimped to the hardline, sometimes under 25,000 miles, and the hose ages faster for living near the exhaust. Look for a red ATF mist on the frame and crossmember, climbing fluid temperature and flare shifts. After that, power does the sorting. The stock torque converter is usually first to go when output climbs: the thin stator cracks, the soft front cover balloons, and once it starts shedding, that debris travels through the fluid and takes the rest of the unit with it. Slipping in the C3 gears and limp mode locked in third show up with added power or heavy towing, commonly past 100,000 miles. Limp mode is the transmission protecting itself, triggered by excessive slip, overheating or heavy load, and an ECM calibration added without matching TCM work finds it quickly. With age, valve body valves can seize in worn bores, pump gears lose efficiency and the babbitt bushings wear, which reads as sloppier shifts than new, quick downshifts under load and delayed engagement. At extreme power the C2 hub and the P2 planetary snout break on hard three-to-four upshifts, the P2 around the 800 hp mark, with the pre-2011 input shaft good for roughly 600 hp. One more thing worth knowing: adaptive shift logic masks a lot of degradation, so one of these can feel acceptable right up until it is not.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Roughly 430 to 450 rwhp and 850 to 900 lb-ft is the practical ceiling for a stock LBZ/LMM-era Allison, where the 2011-and-later units handle 500 and up. Below that number, spend on maintenance and the known weak points: updated OE cooler lines or braided aftermarket lines with flared unions, correct Dexron-VI, fresh filters, and a deep pan if you tow. Published service is 50,000 miles normal and 25,000 severe, and heavy towers often report running far shorter than that. When you do go past stock, the order matters. TCM calibration comes first so the transmission is commanded properly, then a billet-cover multi-disc converter, then the valve body, then a fully built unit. The internal upgrades that have earned their place are a billet C2 hub, a billet P2 planetary, a PTO cover that routes oil to the C3 clutches, hardened pump gears, bronze bushings and genuine Allison solenoids.

What we carry

PPE is the deepest line on this page: billet input, intermediate and output shafts, a billet C-2 clutch hub, Stage 5 and Stage 6G transmission kits, valve body recalibration and pressure calibration kits, deep and low-profile pans with the matching deep-pan filters, bar-and-plate coolers, a transfer case brace and PTO side plate covers. Merchant Automotive handles the seal work, including Allison 1000 converter housing reseal kits and the pass-through transmission connector seal. BD Diesel brings six-speed valve bodies and cooler and filter kits cataloged for these years, and ATS Diesel Performance and Fleece Performance Engineering add transmission hard parts. Allison Transmission supplies the deep pan and the spin-on filter, Mishimoto the pans and the heavy-duty and universal fluid coolers, XDP the flex plates and an Xtra Cool direct-fit transmission oil cooler, Mag-Hytec cast deep sump pans, Hot Shot's Secret the fluids and additives, and Dorman and ACDelco the small parts, down to torque converter bolts and the transfer case output shaft seal.

Fitment notes

Valve bodies and shift kits for the 2006-2010 six-speed are listed separately from 2011-and-up parts, and the shift kit is a 2006-2008 part only, so a 2009 or 2010 Silverado goes the valve body route. Built transmissions are assembled as 2WD or 4WD units and are not the same part, so know your drivetrain before you order. Internal filter depth follows the pan: a deep sump takes a deep-pan filter, a standard sump takes the standard one. Keep the 2010/2011 line straight, too, because 2011 brought the LML with a new frame, revised suspension and a different driveline, so a part listed for 2011 and newer is not a 2010 part. Cab and box vary across Regular, Extended and Crew Cab with the 6 ft 6 in or 8 ft bed, and 3500HD trucks came single or dual rear wheel, which matters once you are working around the crossmember and driveshaft. Frequently asked questions

What transmission is in a 2007.5-2010 Silverado 2500HD with the LMM Duramax?

The Allison 1000 six-speed automatic, with double overdrive and Tap-Up/Tap-Down manual selection. It was the only transmission offered with the LMM in these pickups. Ratios run 3.094 in first down to 0.614 in sixth, and factory fluid is Dexron-VI.

Why is my Allison stuck in third gear?

That is limp mode, and it is a protection strategy, not a random fault. It triggers on excessive clutch slip, high fluid temperature or heavy load, and a tuned truck can hit it quickly if the ECM side was changed without matching TCM calibration. Get the codes read before you buy parts, because the cause ranges from a cooler line leak that dropped the fluid level to real clutch damage.

How often should the fluid and filters be changed?

The published guidance is 50,000 miles for normal use and 25,000 for severe service, using Dexron-VI with the TF920 sump filter and the TF950 spin-on. Owners who tow heavy often run much shorter intervals than that by choice. Since adaptive shift logic can hide wear, clean fluid is the cheapest protection you can buy for an Allison.

How much power can the stock Allison take?

Figure 430 to 450 rwhp and 850 to 900 lb-ft before the stock converter becomes the limiting part. The converter stator and front cover are the first pieces to let go, and the debris they shed contaminates the fluid and damages what is downstream. If you plan to pass that mark, start with TCM calibration and a billet-cover multi-disc converter instead of waiting for the failure.
