When retrofitting a 2017+ engine into an older (11-16) truck, there are many things to take into consideration; one of which is with the cooling system. The ports in the 2017+ water pump are intended to supply the transmission cooler with coolant. These blocks offs install in the water pump housing to allow the use of newer engines in older trucks (2011-2016).

Since the 11-16 truck transmission coolers are supplied by the secondary cooling system they do not need these ports hence the need for block off plugs.
