Fitment

Fits 2007.5-2024 Dodge Ram and Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups with the 6.7L Cummins and the 68RFE automatic. The title runs through 2024 while our engine tags run to the current model year, so verify fitment by VIN on anything newer than 2024.

The 68RFE is not the only transmission behind the 6.7L, and filters do not cross between them. The G56 six-speed manual was offered through 2018. 2007.5-2009 chassis cabs used the Aisin AS68RC. From 2013, High Output 3500 pickups got the Aisin AS69RC, and Aisin parts never fit a 68RFE truck. The quick check is the dipstick: passenger side means 68RFE, driver side means Aisin. Why this part

The 68RFE is the weak link on this platform. Failures were especially common on 2007-2011 trucks and typically land somewhere between 50,000 and 150,000 miles. The signs are slipping in 4th through 6th, harsh or flared shifts, limp mode and metal in the pan. Its known weak spots include hydraulic failures in gears 4-6 from valve-bore wear. On 2019 and later trucks, a warped or blown valve-body accumulator plate causes cross-leaks, P0871 codes and harsh shifts, and a degraded torque-converter clutch adds a 40-50 mph shudder and spreads debris through the unit.

A filter will not fix a worn valve body or a slipping clutch pack. What it does is give the fluid a fresh filter at every service, and dropping the pan to change it lets you see what the transmission is shedding before it turns into a rebuild.

The 68RFE runs two filters: this sump filter inside the pan and a spin-on external filter. A complete filter service needs both, so pick up the spin-on filter at the same time if you do not have one on the shelf.

Installation notes

PPE recommends replacing the filter during each transmission service. Drop the pan, swap this filter and the external spin-on filter together, and look over the bottom of the pan for clutch material or metal before it goes back up. Have a pan gasket on hand before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Does this replace the spin-on filter too?

No. This is the pan, or sump, filter only. The 68RFE also uses a spin-on external filter, and a complete service replaces both.

Will it fit a High Output 3500 or a manual truck?

No. High Output 3500 pickups from 2013 on use the Aisin AS69RC, and manual trucks use the G56. This filter is for the 68RFE. If the dipstick is on the passenger side, you have a 68RFE.

How often should I change it?

PPE recommends replacing it during each transmission service. Use the service schedule in your owner's manual for the interval that matches how you use the truck.
