Why this part
On the L5P, each bank's cast exhaust manifold feeds an up-pipe that runs to the valley-mounted BorgWarner turbo. A blown manifold gasket lets exhaust escape at that joint before it reaches the turbo. On this engine that is more than a nuisance. GM lists intake and exhaust leaks among the causes of DPF soot overload, which shows up as a Continue Driving message, frequent regens, reduced power and code P2463. Exhaust leaks are also on the list of things to rule out when you are diagnosing emissions-related faults. So when the manifolds come off for a leak repair or engine work, both gaskets get replaced, not reused.
