The MAHLE JV1622 Rear Main Seal Set reseals the rear of the crankshaft on 1989-2002 Dodge trucks with the 5.9L Cummins, both the 12-valve and the 24-valve. MAHLE builds it to OE form, fit and function, so you get a factory-like seal on a job you only want to do once.
Fitment
MAHLE lists the JV1622 for these 5.9L Cummins engines:
- 1989-1993 5.9L Cummins 12-valve
- 1994-1998 5.9L Cummins 12-valve
- 1998.5-2002 5.9L Cummins 24-valve (Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500)
In 1994-2002 trucks the Cummins came only in the 2500 and 3500; no second-gen Ram 1500 had one. The 2002 truck is still a second-gen, and 2003 brought the common-rail fuel system, whose parts do not carry back. For 2003-2018 5.9L and 6.7L engines, MAHLE lists the JV1690 rear main seal set instead. Verify fitment by VIN or call us before you order.
Why this part
The rear main seal keeps engine oil in at the back of the crankshaft. MAHLE makes the JV1622 to OE form, fit and function, and says it performs as good as or better than the original seal. Pick it when you want a factory-like fit and a factory-like seal, not a guess.
Before you commit to a rear main, rule out the leaks that fool people on these trucks. On 1991.5-2002 engines, the tandem vacuum and power-steering pump can leak engine oil where the power-steering pump shaft enters the rear of the pump. It drips on the floor from the pump area, and it has its own reseal kit. On 1998.5-2002 24-valves, the crankcase breather sits at the front of the engine. It can push a lot of oil out on steep descents and drip on the driveway, and it is often mistaken for a front-axle seal leak. Dodge TSB 09-002-02 moves the breather inlet back alongside the engine. If those check out dry and the oil is coming from the rear of the crank, this is the set.
