Why this part
Here is why the turbo on these trucks comes off. On 2007-2009 trucks the sliding nozzle ring and vanes coat with soot, oil and ash and stop moving freely. That shows up as excessive turbo lag, poor top-end power, surging and a weak or stuck exhaust brake. Idling and short trips make it worse, and it can appear well under 100,000 miles; 2009 turbos got an access port in the turbine housing to help with cleaning. On 2010-2018 trucks the same sticking sets codes P226B or P226C, and the fix is disassembly and manual cleaning.
Hard failures happen too: leaking oil seals, compressor wheel damage from dust, turbine damage from heat, speed-sensor faults and worn bearings with shaft play. Oil in the intercooler piping, blue smoke and a whine are the usual tells. Whether you are cleaning the VGT or bolting on a factory-type Holset replacement, every joint you break needs a fresh seal. Read the codes before you pull anything. Stuck vanes usually set P226B or P226C rather than actuator codes, while P00AF almost always means the actuator. The actuator is a separate replaceable module, and factory Holset actuators typically fail around 5,000 operating hours.
