The HP Tuners E41 Upgrade Kit lets you upgrade the E41 ECM on a 2017-2023 Silverado or Sierra 2500HD/3500HD with the 6.6L L5P Duramax without removing it from the truck. The job takes 20 minutes or less. Once it's done, the ECM supports read, write and special functions in VCM Suite, HP Tuners' tuning software.
Fitment
The E41 ECM is found in 2017-2023 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 6.6L Duramax trucks, and the kit is listed for L5P and L5D applications. The L5P is the engine in the 2500HD/3500HD pickups. The L5D is the medium-duty Duramax used in Silverado 4500HD-6500HD chassis-cab trucks, not the pickups. The listing covers 2017-2023. GM revised the ECM for 2024, so a 2024 or newer truck isn't covered here. Verify fitment by VIN, or call the shop before you order.
Why this part
This kit is what enables read, write and special functions on the E41 in VCM Suite, using an MPVI2+ (with Pro Feature Set) or MPVI3 interface. The advantage is that the ECM stays in the truck. You don't pull it, you don't send it out, and the whole upgrade takes 20 minutes or less.
Whether you need the kit at all depends on model year. If you own a 2018-2023 model year, you can usually upgrade your truck directly via the OBDII port. For all 2017 trucks and some 2018 trucks, the GM E41 ECM Upgrade Kit is still required. 2019-2023 trucks don't need it.

To use it you need VCM Suite and an MPVI2+ (with Pro Feature Set) or MPVI3 interface. If you're not sure which of the two options fits your setup, call the shop before you order.
Installation notes
Plan on 20 minutes or less with the ECM left in place. On a 2018-2023 truck, try the direct upgrade through the OBDII port first.
Important for our rental program: for all 2017 and some 2018 trucks, the GM E41 ECM Upgrade Kit is still required. There's no VIN cutoff to determine which 2018 models need the unlock cable. You'll only know after you connect the MPVI3 to your truck and laptop and try to write your stock file back to the ECM.
If you do need it, we offer the E41 Upgrade Cable for rent. It carries a rental fee and a refundable core deposit; call the shop for the current amounts. Once you return the cable, your deposit is refunded. We understand this isn't ideal, but it's the only way to confirm compatibility.
Note: this does not apply to 2019-2023 trucks.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need this kit for a 2019-2023 truck?
No. On 2019-2023 trucks you can upgrade the E41 directly via the OBDII port, and the upgrade-kit requirement doesn't apply.
How do I know if my 2018 needs the unlock cable?
There's no VIN cutoff that tells you. Connect the MPVI3 to your truck and laptop and try to write your stock file back to the ECM; that's the only way to find out. If you do need it, we rent the E41 Upgrade Cable with a refundable deposit.
Which interface works with the upgrade kit?
An MPVI2+ with the Pro Feature Set, or an MPVI3. With either one and VCM Suite, the upgraded E41 supports read, write and special functions.
