The Cummins 3918999 Genuine Harmonic Balancer will replace the failed damper on your 1998.5-2002 Dodge Ram equipped with a 5.9L Diesel Engine. The factory damper uses a rubber ring between the machined steel pulley/inertia ring and cast hub to dampen the engine harmonics. By allowing the two components to flex and move independently of one another, this tuned rubber ring dampens out engine vibration. These fail over time due to wear. The rubber ring will begin to protrude and no longer effectively cancel out harmonics which could potentially the damage the crankshaft and engine. This harmonic balancer will bolt in place of the old one to help ensure your engine runs smoothly again.
