Call or Text (352) 722-5295Fuel sumps on the 2019-2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins
From the factory, this Cummins draws fuel with an electric lift pump inside the tank. It primes when you turn the key to run and feeds a frame-mounted water separator, an engine-mounted 3-micron filter and then the high-pressure pump: a Bosch CP4.2 on 2019-2020 trucks, a CP3 on 2021-2024. Owners who add a frame-mounted lift pump and filtration system need another way to pull fuel from the tank, and that's the sump's job. It replaces the in-tank pickup draw with a fitting at the bottom of the tank, and the external pump pulls from there.
Why the supply side gets attention
The fuel-system problem this generation is known for is the CP4.2 on 2019-2020 trucks. A failing pump sheds metal into the rail, injectors, lines and tank, with ticking, loss of power, stalling or a no-start, and metal in the fuel filter as the warning signs. Recall 21V-880 (Y78) swapped in a CP3, reflashed the PCM and inspected the fuel system. Both the CP4 and the CP3 depend on the frame-mounted water separator to keep water out. Frame-mounted lift pump systems built for this truck aim to steady supply pressure and add water and air separation ahead of the high-pressure pump, and a sump is one way those systems draw from the tank.
Stock pickup vs. sump
If you're keeping the factory lift pump, the stock in-tank pickup stays and a sump usually isn't part of the job. Once you go to a frame-mounted pump, the big choice is the return. Some systems, like internally regulated designs, run no return line at all, and a one-hole sump without a return port suits them. Others send fuel back to the tank, and a sump with an integrated return gives that line a home in the same fitting. Follow your lift pump's instructions on which it needs.
What we carry
Sumps here come with and without a built-in return:
- XDP XD182 fuel tank sump, one-hole design.
- XDP XD243 fuel tank sump, one-hole design with fuel return.
- BD Diesel 1050330 Flow-Max fuel tank sump.
- G&R Diesel GRD00153 bottom sump with integrated return.
Need the pump itself? Start in our lift pumps category, and check that the sump you pick matches its return setup.
Fitment notes
Sumps are tank-specific and bed-length specific. Crew cab short-bed Cummins trucks carry a 31-gallon factory tank, and other cab and bed combinations vary. The 2023-2024 Rebel, where the Cummins was optional, comes with a factory skid plate protecting the fuel tank, so mention it when you ask about fitment. On a 2019 or 2020, confirm whether the truck has the original CP4.2 or the post-Y78 CP3, since fuel-system kits must match what is on the truck. Verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a sump if I keep the stock lift pump?
Usually not. The factory setup draws through its own in-tank pump and pickup. Sump kits for the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L are sold bundled with some frame-mounted lift pumps, because they replace that in-tank draw. Buy the sump when you're installing the pump that will pull from it.
Which sump should I pick, one with a return or without?
Match the lift pump. An internally regulated system with no return line can pair with a one-hole sump like the XDP XD182. A system that returns fuel to the tank can use a sump with an integrated return, such as the XDP XD243 or the G&R Diesel GRD00153. When in doubt, call with the pump model in hand.
My 2019 had a CP4 failure. Anything to know before adding a sump?
Yes. A failed CP4 sheds metal into the tank along with the rail, injectors and lines, and some owners report misfires after the Y78 retrofit, with leftover contamination the usual suspect. With the tank open for the sump, that's the time to deal with what's inside it. If Y78 was never completed, have the dealer do it first; the recall is free.
Will one sump fit every 2019-2024 Ram 2500 and 3500?
Don't assume it. Sumps are tank-specific, short bed versus long bed, and tank size changes with cab and bed. Check the fitment notes on each listing, run the fitment checker, and verify your tank by VIN.
