Call or Text (352) 722-5295The oil system on the 2019-2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins
On this Cummins, oil choice is tied directly to the engine's weak spot. The 2019 redesign brought hydraulic roller lifters, and a Ram TSB says thicker oil fails to pressurize them when cold. The same redesign moved to a higher-volume oil pump in an aluminum housing. The sump holds 12.0 quarts with the filter, which is three gallon jugs. The filter is a spin-on through 2024; the factory numbers are Fleetguard LF16035 and Mopar 5083285AA. The factory interval is 15,000 miles, 6 months or 500 hours at most, and 12,500 miles if you run B6-B20 biodiesel.
What goes wrong and why
Three things show up in the oil on this engine. First is the wrong grade: Ram's TSB rules out 15W-40 on 2019 and newer engines because it does not pressurize the lifters when cold, and running it can also void the warranty. Second is fuel dilution. The DPF is cleaned by in-cylinder post-injection, and some of that fuel ends up in the oil, so the level climbs and the oil thins out. Long idling and short, cold trips make it worse. Third is metal. Lifters, the turbo and the injection system can all leave metal in the oil, and oil analysis is the recommended early-warning tool for catching it.
Choosing oil, filters and hardware
The oil shelf here serves a lot of diesel trucks, so not every jug is right for yours. For a 2019-2024 6.7L, pick a 10W-30 API CK-4 for temperatures above 0 F, such as Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond or Black Diamond Outlaw 10W-30 full synthetic, or Lucas 10282 synthetic blend 10W-30 CK-4. For any temperature, pick a 5W-40 full synthetic CK-4, such as Hot Shot's Green Diamond or Blue Diamond 5W-40. Skip anything outside those two grades, including the 15W-40 jugs; they are stocked for other trucks. If you tow hard or idle a lot, shorten the interval and send an oil sample 500 to 1,000 miles before each change. Additives are on the shelf too, but none of them replaces running the right grade.
What we carry
- Engine oil: Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond Outlaw CK-4 oils plus ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils, and Lucas Oil CK-4 and CI-4 diesel oils.
- Oil additives: Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer (conventional and synthetic) and TB Zinc Plus break-in additive, Hot Shot's TBN Booster, FR3 Friction Reducer and Stiction Eliminator, and XDP X-Factor.
- Filters: PPE MicroPure XR and MAHLE OC1001 spin-on oil filters.
- Cooling and pumps: genuine Cummins 3975818 oil cooler with the 3974127 and 2830559 cooler gaskets, a Mishimoto replacement oil cooler, and an Alliant Power new oil pump for 2019-2024 plus an oil, fuel and coolant temperature sensor.
- Pan and service hardware: Dorman 264-860 oil pan, Cummins 5522189 pan gasket, XDP pan bolt kit, Cummins cable-style dipstick, Dorman 904-418 CCV filter with the Cummins 3999820 CCV gasket, and WCFab billet oil fill cap and #10 JIC drain block fitting.
Fitment notes
Oils and additives are matched by grade, not by year. Hardware is different. The MAHLE OC1001 filter is listed through 2023, so 2024 owners should confirm it or use the PPE filter, which is listed through 2024. The WCFab drain block fitting is listed for 1989-2022. The Dorman oil pan covers 2013-2024 and the Cummins pan gasket 2013-2025. The CCV filter is on a 75,000-mile or 60-month interval on 2019 and newer trucks. Do not carry these filters forward to a 2025: that engine switched to a cartridge oil filter. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run 15W-40 in my 2019-2024 6.7L Cummins?
No. A Ram TSB says 15W-40 is not to be used in 2019 and newer engines, because the thicker oil fails to pressurize the hydraulic lifters when cold, and running it can also void the warranty. Use 10W-30 CK-4 above 0 F or 5W-40 full synthetic.
How often should I change the oil?
The factory maximum is 15,000 miles, 6 months or 500 hours, and 12,500 miles if you run B6-B20 biodiesel. If you tow or idle a lot, shorten that, and pull an oil sample 500 to 1,000 miles before each change to watch for metal.
Why is my oil level going up?
On this engine, a rising oil level points to fuel dilution. The DPF is regenerated by in-cylinder post-injection, and some of that fuel can end up in the oil, raising the level and thinning it. Excessive idling and short, cold trips make it worse, and an oil analysis will show how much fuel is in there.
What oil filter fits a 2019-2024 6.7L Cummins?
It takes a spin-on filter through 2024; the factory numbers are Fleetguard LF16035 and Mopar 5083285AA. In this collection, the PPE MicroPure XR is listed for 1989-2024 Cummins and the MAHLE OC1001 for 1989-2023, so check the year on the MAHLE if your truck is a 2024.
