Call or Text (352) 722-5295The right oil for the 2019-2024 RAM 6.7L Cummins
Oil grade carries extra weight on this engine. The 2019 redesign brought hydraulic roller lifters, the first on a Cummins, and they are the generation's main internal weak point. A lifter that collapses or seizes can gouge the cam and put metal in the oil. The symptom to listen for is a typewriter-like tick on a cold start that doesn't fade. Running 15W-40 against the bulletin can also put your warranty at risk. The 6.7L Cummins takes 12.0 quarts with the filter, so plan on three gallon jugs per change.
Change intervals top out at 15,000 miles, 6 months or 500 hours, and 12,500 miles on B6-B20. Shorten them if you tow or idle a lot. Idle time and short, cold trips also let regen fuel thin the oil, which shows up as a rising oil level. An oil sample before each change is the recommended early warning for lifter, turbo or injection-system metal.
What we carry, and what to pick
Oils in this collection that match the 2019-2024 spec:
- Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond 10W-30 Full Synthetic CK-4
- Hot Shot's Secret Black Diamond Outlaw 10W-30 Full Synthetic CK-4
- Hot Shot's Secret Blue Diamond 5W-40 Full Synthetic CK-4
- Hot Shot's Secret Green Diamond 5W-40 Full Synthetic CK-4
- Lucas Oil Synthetic Blend 10W-30 CK-4
The 15W-40 oils from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil and the 0W-20 light-duty diesel oil fall outside the 2019-2024 spec, and 15W-40 is excluded by name, so leave those for other trucks. The Hot Shot's Secret ADRENALINE R-Series 15W-40, 20W-50 and 5W-20 racing oils are outside the spec by grade. The R-Series 10W-30 doesn't list an API CK-4 rating in its title, so confirm the rating on the product page before choosing it. The additives here include Lucas Heavy Duty and Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, Lucas TB Zinc Plus break-in additive, Hot Shot's Secret TBN Booster, FR3 Friction Reducer and The Original Stiction Eliminator, and XDP X-Factor oil additive. An additive goes in on top of a spec oil; it doesn't turn an off-spec grade into the right one.
Fitment notes
Use 10W-30 CK-4 only above 0 F; 5W-40 full synthetic covers all temperatures. If you're coming from an older Cummins that ran 15W-40, don't carry that habit over to a 2019-2024 truck.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run 15W-40 in my 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins?
No. A Ram service bulletin says 15W-40 is not to be used in 2019 and newer engines, because the thicker oil fails to pressurize the hydraulic lifters when cold. Running it can also void warranty. Use 10W-30 CK-4 above 0 F or 5W-40 full synthetic.
How much oil does the 2019-2024 6.7L take?
12.0 quarts with the filter, which is three of the gallon jugs on this page. Change the filter every time; the factory part is a spin-on through 2024.
What does a lifter problem sound like?
The symptom tied to this generation's lifter failures is a typewriter-like tick on a cold start that doesn't fade, along with metal in the oil and misfire. Oil analysis before each change is the recommended early warning. If you hear that tick, get the truck looked at before you put more miles on it.
