2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins Coolant

Coolant for the 2019-2024 Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 6.7L Cummins. The system holds 23.8 quarts, and Ram fills it at the factory with a 10-year/150,000-mile OAT coolant mixed 50/50 with distilled water. The rule that matters most here is simple: do not mix that OAT coolant with an older HOAT coolant.

Coolant on the 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins

The 2019 redesign of the 6.7L Cummins increased cooling capacity, and the system now holds 23.8 quarts on standard-output and high-output engines alike. That is a little under six gallons, so a full flush takes more than a jug or two. Ram's factory fill is an OAT coolant rated for 10 years or 150,000 miles, mixed 50/50 with distilled water, and the flush interval is 150,000 miles or 120 months. Coolant on this engine does more than cool the block. It also runs through the liquid-cooled EGR cooler and out to the heater core.

What the coolant level tells you

With a 10-year factory interval, coolant is not something you change often on this truck, but the level tells you a lot. A level in the degas bottle that keeps dropping with no drips under the truck points toward an internal EGR cooler leak. The other signs are white, sweet-smelling steam on a cold start and a P2457 code. Owners of 2020 and 2021 trucks report cracked EGR coolers burning coolant. Topping off over and over hides that problem instead of fixing it, so find where the coolant is going before you keep pouring.

Choosing a coolant

Start with chemistry. The factory fill is OAT, and it should not be mixed with HOAT. Read the label on any coolant for its chemistry and what it is compatible with before you add it to a truck that still has factory coolant. If you do not know what is in your system now, or you want to change types, drain and flush rather than top off. Then decide on convenience. Pre-mixed coolant goes straight in. A full-strength coolant has to be mixed 50/50 with distilled water, which is the factory spec. An additive goes into coolant that is already in the system, so follow its directions.

What we carry

  • Mishimoto Liquid Chill: pre-mixed coolant in yellow and purple, Liquid Chill synthetic coolant including a pre-mixed version, and Liquid Chill radiator coolant additive.
  • Hot Shot's Secret: 150K-mile extended life green, 150,000-mile heavy duty extended life yellow and 750,000-mile heavy duty ultra long life red, in one-gallon jugs.
  • Lucas Oil: Super Coolant.

Fitment notes

Coolant is not matched to the truck by part number the way a hose is. The questions are chemistry and quantity. Check the label against the factory OAT spec, avoid mixing with HOAT, and buy enough to refill a 23.8-quart system. If you are refilling after an EGR cooler, hose or radiator repair, plan the coolant purchase with the parts so the truck is not sitting half full.

Frequently asked questions

What coolant comes in a 2019-2024 Ram 6.7L Cummins from the factory?

Ram fills these trucks with an OAT coolant rated for 10 years or 150,000 miles, mixed 50/50 with distilled water. The flush interval is 150,000 miles or 120 months. Whatever you buy, check that the label says it is compatible with that chemistry.

How much coolant do I need for a full flush?

The system holds 23.8 quarts on both standard-output and high-output engines, which is just under six gallons of mixed coolant. With pre-mixed coolant in one-gallon jugs, that works out to about six jugs.

Can I top off with a different coolant than what is in the truck?

Not if it means mixing chemistries. The factory OAT coolant should not be mixed with an older HOAT coolant. If you are not sure what is in the system, drain and flush it and refill with one coolant.

My coolant keeps going down. Should I just keep adding more?

No. On this engine, coolant loss with no drips points toward an internal EGR cooler leak, often with white, sweet-smelling steam on a cold start and a P2457 code. Find the cause first, then refill.
