Ram fits dual Group 65, 730 cold-cranking-amp, maintenance-free batteries to every 6.7L Cummins truck in this generation. The 6.4L Hemi trucks get a single Group 65. The difference comes down to cold starts. Through 2024, the Cummins uses an intake grid heater as its cold-start aid, and that heater draws on the order of 200 amps. The batteries and cables take the biggest load at that moment, before the alternator starts putting charge back. The alternator is 180 amps on base trucks and 220 amps on Laramie, Longhorn and Limited diesels. Two batteries share the work, which is why they get serviced as a pair.
Replacing batteries the right way
The direct replacement is a matched pair of Group 65 AGM batteries. On a dual-battery diesel, replace both at the same time rather than putting one new battery next to an old one. If the truck cranks slowly, start with the batteries and cables. Our research shows no documented starter failure pattern for 2019-2024, and slow cranking on these trucks is more often a battery or cable problem given the grid heater draw. On 2021-2023 trucks, also confirm the grid heater relay recall (23V-060) has been done. That relay controls the heater that puts the biggest load on the batteries, and the recall covers an electrical short with a fire risk.
