Fuel Tank Sumps on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel

From the factory, the EcoDiesel's low-pressure supply side, the in-tank pump and the fuel filter, feeds a Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump that supplies the common rail. Ram's launch literature calls the system MultiJet II common-rail injection and approves B20 biodiesel. A sump does not replace any of that on its own. It is a fitting installed in the bottom of the fuel tank so an aftermarket supply system can pull fuel from the lowest point of the tank instead of through the factory pickup.

What fails and why

The fuel-system problem that defines this engine is the CP4.2 high-pressure pump. It can fail internally and send metal debris through the rails, injectors and lines; warning signs include a fuel leak at the pump, excessive pump noise, a warning light, loss of power, stalling or a no-start. Every year on this page falls under an HPFP recall: 22V406 for 2014-2019 trucks, 22V767 for 2020-2022 and 23V263 for 2021-2023. After a pump failure, the recall remedy inspects the low-pressure supply side for debris. The sump itself has no documented failure history on this truck.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

Stock means the factory in-tank pickup. Before any fuel-system work, make sure the HPFP recall is current by VIN; it is the only factory-backed fix for the CP4.2. A sump is an upgrade part for owners adding an aftermarket supply system. Aftermarket lift-pump fitment for this engine has not been confirmed, so putting a sump in an EcoDiesel tank is a custom fabrication job, not a bolt-in. Talk it through with the shop before you buy.

What we carry

XDP fuel tank sumps. The XDP XD182 is a one-hole design that installs through a single hole cut in the bottom of the tank. The XDP XD243 is also a one-hole design but adds a fuel return, so fuel coming back from the supply system can return to the tank through the sump fitting. Pick based on whether your supply system returns fuel and where you want that return to land. These are universal parts, not model-specific EcoDiesel kits.

Fitment notes

The XDP sumps here carry no model-specific EcoDiesel fitment, so treat them as universal. Installing one means draining and dropping the tank and cutting it, which makes it a shop job. Ram's 2021 EcoDiesel spec sheet lists a 23-gallon fuel tank; we have not verified the size on other configurations, and the DS-body 2018 Ram 1500 and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic are a different generation underneath from the 2020-2023 DT. The EcoDiesel was sold only in the Ram 1500. Call with your VIN before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Does a stock EcoDiesel need a fuel sump?

No. A sump is for an aftermarket supply system that needs its own draw point in the tank. There is no documented sump-related problem on this engine, so a stock truck has no reason to add one.

What is the difference between the XD182 and the XD243?

Both are XDP one-hole sumps. The XD243 adds a fuel return, so returned fuel goes back into the tank through the sump. If your supply system returns fuel and you want the return at the sump, choose the XD243.

Will a sump protect my CP4.2 pump?

Nothing on this page is a fix for the CP4.2. The factory-backed remedy is the HPFP recall, which replaces the pump and inspects or replaces other fuel-system parts. Check by VIN whether 22V406, 22V767 or 23V263 applies to your truck.
