Under the hood is a plain 12-volt setup: a single battery, a belt-driven alternator and a conventional starter, with glow plugs for cold starts. There's no hybrid hardware on the diesel. Ram's eTorque belt generator went on gasoline DT trucks only. The 2018 DS and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic carry the Gen 2 EcoDiesel, and the 2020-2023 DT trucks carry the Gen 3.
Diagnose before you buy
On 2020 and 2021 Gen 3 trucks, owners describe the alternator locking up, which keeps the starter circuit engaged until the starter cooks. What you see: a few attempts to crank, then nothing, maybe smoke from the starter, no stored codes, and a battery that still reads 12.0 to 12.7 volts. In the case owners documented, the answer was a new alternator and a new starter. That's owner-reported, not a recall, and no typical mileage was given. One 2021 owner also reported real trouble finding a replacement alternator, so line one up before you tear the truck apart.

Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid (11238) is a starting aid. It helps a reluctant engine fire; it is not a repair for a bad alternator, starter or battery. Since the EcoDiesel uses glow plugs, check your owner's manual on starting aids before you use it, and follow the directions on the can.
Fitment notes
This engine went in the Ram 1500 only, never a 2500 or 3500. If your 2019 is a diesel, it's a Ram 1500 Classic on the DS body. A 2025 or newer 3.0L Ram 1500 is the gasoline Hurricane, not an EcoDiesel. Verify by VIN.

What is starting fluid for?
It's a starting aid that helps an engine fire when it's slow to start. It doesn't fix the reason the engine won't start. On a glow-plug engine like the EcoDiesel, read your owner's manual before using any starting aid.
My Gen 3 cranked a few times and then went dead. Is it the starter?
It may be the starter and the alternator. Owners of 2020-2021 EcoDiesels report alternators that seize and keep the starter circuit engaged until it overheats, with no stored codes. Have both checked before you buy parts.
Will a charging part from a 2018 EcoDiesel fit my 2021?
Don't assume it. The 2018 is a DS body with the Gen 2 engine, and the 2021 is a DT with the Gen 3, which Ram called about 80 percent new. Check the fitment listing for your exact year or call us with your VIN.
