Call or Text (352) 722-5295Charging and starting on the 2018-2023 Ram 1500 3.0L EcoDiesel
The EcoDiesel runs a single 12-volt system: one battery, a belt-driven alternator and a conventional starter. Glow plugs handle cold starts. The 2018 DS and 2019 Ram 1500 Classic trucks carry the Gen 2 engine (240 hp, 420 lb-ft). The 2020-2023 DT trucks carry the Gen 3 (260 hp, 480 lb-ft), the version Ram called about 80 percent new.
If you shop parts for a 2020-2023 DT Ram 1500, you'll run into eTorque. That's a belt-driven generator with its own battery pack, and Ram offered it on gasoline engines only. No EcoDiesel has eTorque, so those parts are not for your truck.
What fails and why
The clearest failure story on these trucks comes from owners of 2020 and 2021 Gen 3 EcoDiesels. The alternator seizes. A locked alternator keeps the starter circuit engaged, the starter overheats, and the truck is left a no-start with no stored codes. One owner described three starter attempts and then nothing, smoke from the starter, and a battery still reading 12.0 to 12.7 volts. The fix took both an alternator and a starter. These are owner reports, not a recall, and no mileage pattern was given.
Finding the part can be its own problem. One 2021 owner reported landing what may have been the last Mopar replacement alternator available. On the 2018 trucks, recall 18V332 addressed cruise control that could fail to disengage because of a short. The remedy was a software flash to the engine computer, so that one is a dealer visit, not a part.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
This is a stock-replacement system. We have no verified performance upgrade for the EcoDiesel's alternator or starter, and we won't pretend otherwise. If the alternator seizes, replace it and have the starter tested too, since a seized alternator can cook it. Starting fluid is a starting aid, not a repair. It can help a stubborn engine fire while you track down the real cause. Because the EcoDiesel relies on glow plugs for cold starts, read what your owner's manual says about starting aids before you spray anything into the intake.
What we carry
Right now this collection carries Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid, part 11238. It's a chemical starting aid, not an electrical part. We don't list an alternator, starter or battery for this engine on this page today. If you need one, call the shop for fitment help with your VIN.
Fitment notes
Gen 2 (2018 DS and 2019 Classic) and Gen 3 (2020-2023 DT) are different engines in different bodies, so don't assume a charging or starting part crosses over between them; check the listing for your year. A diesel 2019 is always the Classic; the new 2019 DT had no diesel. A 2025 or later Ram 1500 with a 3.0L is the gasoline Hurricane six, not an EcoDiesel. And this was a Ram 1500 engine only; no 2500 or 3500 used it. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my 2020 EcoDiesel start when the battery tests good?
Owners of 2020 and 2021 Gen 3 trucks report a seized alternator that keeps the starter engaged until the starter overheats. The result is a no-start with no stored codes and a battery that still reads normal. Have the alternator checked along with the starter.
If my alternator seized, do I need a starter too?
It's likely. A locked alternator keeps the starter circuit engaged, and in the owner reports we have, the fix took both an alternator and a starter. Have the starter tested before you put the truck back in service.
Does the EcoDiesel have eTorque?
No. eTorque, the belt-driven generator and battery pack on the 2019-and-later DT Ram 1500, was offered on gasoline engines only. Your EcoDiesel uses a conventional alternator and starter, so skip any eTorque parts.
Is the 2018 cruise control recall a charging problem?
No. Recall 18V332 covered 2018 trucks whose cruise control could fail to disengage because of a short. The fix was a software flash to the engine computer, done by a dealer, with no charging or starting parts involved.
Can I use starting fluid on my EcoDiesel?
The EcoDiesel uses glow plugs for cold starts, so check what your owner's manual says about starting aids before you use one, and follow the directions on the can. Don't use starting fluid to cover up a charging or starter problem; find the cause.
