Call or Text (352) 722-5295Cold air intakes on the 2010-2018 RAM 6.7L Cummins
From the factory, the 6.7L Cummins breathes through a hood-fed airbox and a baffled tube that runs to the turbo. For 2013, Ram added Ram Active Air, a swing gate in the airbox that can draw from a ram-air duct behind the grille. 2010-2012 trucks never got it. A cold air intake replaces the airbox, filter and tube, and because the factory pieces changed at 2013, the 2010-2012 and 2013-2018 kits are different part numbers.
What holds the factory intake back
The factory intake's main issue is restriction. The large baffling system in the stock tube is there to keep the truck quiet, not to feed the turbo. That matters most on 2010-2012 trucks, which have no Active Air. On the 2013-2018 side, some 2013 owners have logged an 'Active Airbox System Faulty' message, but it is an isolated complaint, and the swing-gate airbox it involves exists only on 2013 and later trucks.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If you want a documented emissions-legal intake, start with the kits here that carry CARB Executive Orders:
- S&B 75-5068 (2013-2018): CARB-exempt under EO D-590-33 and street legal in all states, 51.7-54.6% more airflow than stock, with cotton-cleanable or dry filter media.
- Banks Ram-Air 42255 (2013-2018): 50-state legal under EO D-161-134, with 66% more mass airflow by Banks' numbers, an enclosed housing, and an oiled or dry filter.
For 2010-2012 trucks, the S&B kit is the 75-5092 and the Banks kit is the 42180 Ram-Air; check each product page for its EO status before you buy. The same goes for the WCFab and aFe kits. Stock is still a fine choice for a truck that only needs service: keep the factory airbox and change the filter every 30,000 miles or 24 months.

Fitment notes
Intakes split hard at the 2013 model year. A 2010-2012 kit will not fit a 2013-2018 truck, and the reverse is true too. Chassis cabs usually need their own versions, though the Banks 42255 is listed for 2013-2018 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500. The aFe 51-72005 is listed for 2013-2018 Ram 2500/3500 pickups. Remember that 2010 trucks wear Dodge badges; they take the 2010-2012 kits. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Which intake fits my truck?
Start with the model year. 2010-2012 trucks take the S&B 75-5092, the Banks 42180 or the WCFab 2010-2012 kits. 2013-2018 trucks take the S&B 75-5068, the Banks 42255, the aFe 51-72005 or the WCFab 2013-2018 kits. Chassis cabs need a kit that lists them by name.
Can I run a cold air intake and stay emissions legal?
Yes, with the right part. The S&B 75-5068 is CARB-exempt under EO D-590-33, and the Banks 42255 is 50-state legal under EO D-161-134, both for 2013-2018 trucks. For any other kit, find the EO number on the product page first.
Will an intake help a 2011 more than a 2016?
Generally, yes. Every 2010-2018 truck has the baffled factory tube, but 2010-2012 trucks also lack the Ram Active Air system the later trucks have, so an intake upgrade tends to help the older trucks more.
Cotton or dry media on my new intake?
S&B and Banks both sell their 2013-2018 kits with either. Cotton is cleaned, re-oiled and reused; dry media is never oiled. Either way, the 30,000-mile or 24-month interval is a sensible baseline for checking it.
