Call or Text (352) 722-5295The oil system on the 2007.5-2009 Ram 6.7L Cummins
A crank-driven gerotor pump feeds this engine, and the system holds 12.0 quarts with the filter. The spec is API CJ-4 low-ash oil: 15W-40 above 0 F, or 5W-40 full synthetic for cold weather or all temperatures. The normal interval is 7,500 miles or six months. The drain plug torques to 35 lb-ft, and the filter should be pre-filled about three-quarters before it goes on. The crankcase breather filter sits in the valve cover on this Cummins, and its filter, cover and gasket are on this page too.
What fails and why
Fuel dilution is the issue to know. During active DPF regeneration the engine uses post-injection, and some of that fuel ends up in the oil. Ram's own diesel supplement lists up to 5% dilution as acceptable and recommends diagnosis above that. The signs are an oil level rising past the full mark, thin oil with a diesel smell on the dipstick, and low viscosity on an oil analysis. Heavy idling, short trips and frequent regens make it worse, and it shows up between normal change intervals.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
The low-cost answer to dilution is oil and timing, not hardware: run a 5W-40 full synthetic CJ-4 or CK-4 and shorten the interval on the severe schedule. On heavily idled or towing trucks, Diesel Hub recommends an oil analysis 500-1,000 miles ahead of a scheduled change, and keeping idle to 10 minutes or less in any hour. For hard parts, genuine Cummins oil pumps, filter housings and oil coolers match the factory. Small service upgrades include the Mishimoto magnetic drain plug and the XDP oil pan bolt kit.
Choosing the right oil
Read the label before you buy. Only low-ash CJ-4 or CK-4 oil belongs in a DPF-equipped 6.7L, and older CI-4 oils are not appropriate, including the Lucas Magnum High TBN CI-4 15W-40 on this page. Stick to the factory grades for this truck: 15W-40 above 0 F, or 5W-40 full synthetic for cold weather or year-round use. The 0W-20 light-duty oil falls outside that spec, and any racing oil should be checked for a CJ-4 or CK-4 rating before it goes in a DPF truck. If you use a stabilizer or additive, read its label against the low-ash requirement too.
What we carry
Oil comes from Hot Shot's Secret (Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond diesel oils, ADRENALINE R-Series racing oils and a TBN Booster oil stabilizer) and Lucas Oil (CK-4 15W-40 and 10W-30 oils, oil stabilizers and a zinc break-in additive). Oil filters come from Mahle and PPE. Cummins genuine parts include the oil pump, oil filter housing, oil cooler and its cooler-to-filter and cooler-to-block gaskets, the cable-style dipstick, the lower engine gasket kit and the crankcase ventilation filter gasket. Dorman supplies an oil pan and the crankcase ventilation filter and cover, Alliant Power an oil pump and a temperature sensor, and Mishimoto a replacement oil cooler and a magnetic drain plug. XDP adds an oil pan bolt kit and X-Factor oil additive, Mahle adds pan and oil cooler gasket sets and a drain plug gasket, and you will also see parts from WCFab and ATS Diesel Performance.
Fitment notes
The oil filter cross-reference for this engine is Mopar 5083285AA, which matches Fleetguard LF3972 or LF16035, and both fit 2007.5-2012. The Mahle OC1001 and PPE MicroPure XR filters here are listed for Cummins engines back to 1989. The Dorman crankcase vent filter cover is listed for 2007.5-2011, the Mahle drain plug gasket for 2007.5-2012 and the Mishimoto magnetic drain plug for 2002-2013. Oils and additives are not truck-specific, so match the spec, not just the fitment. Verify part numbers by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does the 2007.5-2009 6.7L Cummins hold?
12.0 quarts with the filter. Pre-fill the new filter about three-quarters before installing it, and torque the drain plug to 35 lb-ft.
What oil should I run in my 6.7L?
API CJ-4 or CK-4 low-ash oil: 15W-40 above 0 F, or 5W-40 full synthetic for cold or all temperatures. Hot Shot's Secret offers CK-4 oil in both 15W-40 and 5W-40 here, and Lucas Oil offers CK-4 15W-40.
How often should I change the oil?
The schedule is 7,500 miles or six months. If the truck idles a lot, makes short trips or tows hard, shorten that on the severe schedule, and consider an oil analysis 500-1,000 miles before the change to see how much fuel is getting in.
Why does my oil smell like diesel?
Fuel dilution from post-injection during DPF regeneration. Ram treats up to 5% as acceptable and recommends diagnosis above that. Keeping idle to 10 minutes or less in any hour helps limit it.
