Aftermarket rear receivers for these trucks come in Class III, IV and V. The Class V hitches use a 2-inch or 2.5-inch opening and are rated up to 20,000 lb gross trailer weight and 2,700 lb tongue weight. That is the hitch's rating, not the truck's. Your truck's own rating governs, so check it before you size a trailer. Most receivers install without drilling the frame, and some installs need the spare tire lowered. Trucks running a roll pan in place of the rear bumper have their own options, with hidden receivers that sit behind the roll pan and a bed-below-roll-pan receiver. Hitch hardware for every truck is on our hitches page, and the rest of the engine lineup is on the Cummins page.
Picking the receiver and the ball mount
Pick the receiver first. A Class V 2.5-inch receiver is the call for trucks without a factory hitch or for owners who need a higher hitch rating. Then match the ball mount to it: the shank size has to match the receiver opening, and the drop sets how level the trailer rides. B&W's Tow & Stow mounts are adjustable, which helps if you pull more than one trailer. The pintle styles are for pintle-ring trailers, and the B&W WDHK4500 is a weight distribution hitch for bumper-pull trailers.
Brakes belong in the same conversation. Towing without working trailer brakes overheats the truck's pads and starts rotor thickness variation, the pulsation you feel after a heavy tow, so get the trailer brakes sorted along with the hitch.
What we carry
B&W Trailer Hitches supplies Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts with 2-inch, 2.5-inch and 3-inch shanks in standard, pintle and MultiPro/MultiFlex styles, with drops from 2.5 to 9 inches, plus heavy-duty ball mounts, a triple-tow ball mount and the WDHK4500 weight distribution hitch. Big Hitch Products supplies the receivers: 2-inch and 2.5-inch hidden receivers that sit behind a roll pan, a bed-below-roll-pan 2.5-inch receiver, a 2.5-inch receiver for the stock bumper, and adjustable pulling hitches in 2-inch and 2.5-inch.
Fitment notes
Look for a factory hitch before you order, since with-hitch and without-hitch receivers are different parts. Read the year range on each listing: the bed-below-roll-pan receiver is listed for 2003-2009, and the hidden receivers for 2003-2018. Roll-pan receivers only apply if your truck has a roll pan. These trucks were sold as the Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 in Regular, Quad and Mega Cab (2006 and later) and are filed under RAM here. On a 2007, check the engine: trucks built after January 1, 2007 got the 6.7L Cummins.
Frequently asked questions
Should I get a 2-inch or 2.5-inch receiver?
Class V receivers for these trucks come in both sizes. Go 2.5-inch if your truck has no factory hitch or you need a higher hitch rating, and match every ball mount shank to that opening.
Will I have to drill the frame?
Most receivers for these trucks install with no frame drilling. Receivers are made in versions for trucks with and without the factory hitch, so order the one that matches your truck.
How do I choose the drop on a ball mount?
With the truck and trailer on level ground, measure from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver opening and from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler. The difference is your drop. Pick the B&W Tow & Stow mount with the drop closest to that number.
Do I need to move the spare tire?
On some installs, yes. The spare may need to be lowered to get a receiver in, so plan for it before you start and check the install notes on the listing.
