2004.5-2007 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Fuel Sumps

Fuel tank sumps for the 2004.5-2007 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 5.9L Cummins. A sump is a pickup that mounts in the bottom of the fuel tank and gives a frame-mounted aftermarket lift pump its own fuel supply. If you are adding a lift pump and filtration system to this truck, plan the sump or pickup at the same time.

Sumps on the 2004.5-2007 RAM 5.9L Cummins

From the factory, your 5.9L Cummins draws fuel with a single electric lift pump. A 2004.5 truck has that pump mounted on the engine beside the filter canister. From 2005 on, it lives in the tank as an in-tank module. Fuel passes the 7-micron Fleetguard FS19856 filter and goes on to the Bosch CP3, which builds rail pressure for six injectors. The tank holds about 35 gallons on the 2006 Ram 2500 spec sheet, and Chrysler service bulletins reference both 34- and 35-gallon tanks on these trucks. A sump gives an aftermarket pump a dedicated pickup in that tank.

Why owners add a sump

Nobody buys a sump because the old one broke. It comes with the decision to install an aftermarket lift pump and filtration system, and that decision usually starts with the factory pump. Diesel Hub puts the factory 24-valve lift pump at about 100,000 miles of expected life. A pump that drops below about 5 psi at full power starves the CP3, and starvation damages the CP3 quickly and can seed the injectors with metal. TDR recommends filtration around 3 microns whenever rail pressure is raised. Frame-mounted systems like that pull fuel through a draw-straw or a sump, and on 2005-2007 in-tank trucks some pumps also call for an optional pickup tube.

One-hole sump vs. sump with return

The sumps here come in two basic layouts. Pick the one that matches how your lift pump kit handles return fuel.

  • Pickup only: the XDP XD182 is a one-hole design without a return fitting. Plan the return line separately.
  • Pickup with return: the XDP XD243 is a one-hole design with a fuel return, and the G&R Diesel GRD00153 is a bottom sump with an integrated return. Both bring return fuel back into the tank through the sump.
  • BD Diesel 1050330 Flow-Max Fuel Tank Sump: check the product page for its layout before you plan your plumbing.

What we carry

This page carries fuel tank sumps from XDP MFG, BD Diesel and G&R Diesel: the XDP XD182 and XD243 one-hole sumps, the BD Diesel 1050330 Flow-Max sump and the G&R Diesel GRD00153 bottom sump with integrated return. For the pumps that pull through them, see our lift pumps page.

Fitment notes

Match the sump to the lift pump kit first, then to the truck. Read the kit instructions to see whether it calls for a sump, a draw-straw or, on 2005-2007 in-tank trucks, an optional pickup tube. A 2004.5 truck has the engine-mounted factory pump, but confirm by looking beside the filter canister. Installing a sump means working at the bottom of the fuel tank, so look over the tank straps while you are there: owner complaints filed on 2006 Ram 2500 trucks include corroded straps letting the tank drop. 2007 is a split year, and trucks built after January 1, 2007 got the 6.7L, so confirm you have the 5.9L. Verify by VIN when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a sump to run an aftermarket lift pump on my 5.9L?

A frame-mounted lift pump system needs its own pickup in the tank, and a sump or draw-straw is how it gets one. On 2005-2007 in-tank trucks, some pumps also list an optional pickup tube. Follow the pump maker's instructions for the pickup they call for.

What does 'with return' mean on a sump?

It means the sump also gives return fuel a path back into the tank. The XDP XD243 and the G&R Diesel GRD00153 are built that way. A one-hole sump like the XDP XD182 is the pickup only, so the return has to be routed separately.

Will a sump protect my CP3 and injectors?

Indirectly. The sump feeds the aftermarket lift pump, and the pump and its filtration are what protect the system. A weak lift pump starves the CP3 and can put metal into the injectors, and TDR recommends about 3-micron filtration whenever rail pressure is raised. The sump keeps that pump supplied.
