On this engine, injection timing, duration and maximum fuel delivery live in the ECM calibration, which is why the early common rail became so tunable. Getting into that calibration takes an interface, and the HP Tuners MPVI4 in this collection is that piece of hardware. It does not change anything on its own; the file loaded through it does. The 2003-2004 calibration is its own animal, with two injection events per cycle against three on 2004.5-2007 trucks and different turbo control, so any file has to match your build. Before you buy
Make three checks. First, confirm HP Tuners software supports your truck's ECM and find out what licensing or unlocks it needs; check the product page for what is included. Second, decide what calibration will go on the truck. For street use it should carry a CARB EO for the 2003-2004 5.9L, and without one the factory calibration stays. Third, respect the hardware: the stock lift pump has roughly 60 to 70 hp of added-fuel headroom, so a file that asks for more needs supporting parts first.

Vendors split 2003-2004 from 2004.5-2007 because injectors, turbo, airbox and wiring changed mid-2004. Check your build date and verify by VIN before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Does the MPVI4 add power by itself?
No. It is an interface between a laptop and the truck. Any change in power comes from the calibration loaded through it, and on a street truck that calibration should carry a CARB EO for this engine.
Can I load a calibration from a 2005 truck onto my 2004?
No. 2003-2004 calibrations use two injection events per cycle and different turbo control than 2004.5-2007, and tuning part numbers are year-specific. Use a file built for your truck's exact build.
Why does my overhead mpg readout look better after tuning?
Added fuel throws off the overhead mpg calculation, so the display reads high. Judge economy at the pump with a full tank and the trip meter.
