The receiver is only part of a towing setup. Diesel Hub's towing section groups trailer brake controllers, 7-way wiring, split-charge isolators for trailer batteries and weight-distribution hardware with the hitch itself, and treats wiring and the 7-pin plug as part of the receiver install. On a 2003-2004 5.9L Cummins Ram, the parts here cover two of those jobs: the plug at the back of the truck and the ball hardware that couples the trailer.
What we carry
- Big Hitch Products BHP4003 7 and 4 Pole Trailer Connector Socket: a combination socket with its own mounting bracket, listed for 2003-2025 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins Rams. The 7-pole side handles trailers that need brake and auxiliary circuits; the 4-pole side covers basic lighting.
- B&W Trailer Hitches hitch balls (BW-THB): pick the ball diameter that matches your trailer coupler and a rating at or above the trailer's loaded weight.
- B&W reducer sleeves (BW-RE-SL): let a ball with a smaller shank fit snugly in a larger hole in your ball mount.
Setting it up right
Match ball diameter to the trailer coupler, and ball shank to the hole in your ball mount; a reducer sleeve bridges the gap when the shank is smaller than the hole. Check the rating on the ball, the ball mount and the receiver. The lowest number is your limit, and the GCWR on your door-jamb label caps the whole combination. Load the trailer about 60 percent ahead of its axles and 40 percent behind, and respect the tongue weight rating on every piece. If your trailer has brakes, plan the brake controller along with the plug.
Fitment notes
The BHP4003 socket is the only truck-specific part here. Its bracket is listed for Cummins Rams from 2003 through 2025, but check the listing against your truck before ordering, especially if you run a roll pan or an aftermarket rear bumper that changes where the socket mounts. Balls and sleeves fit by size, not by truck. Verify by VIN or call us, and browse our hitches for receivers and ball mounts.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a 7-pole or a 4-pole plug?
It depends on the trailer. A 4-pole plug handles basic lights, while a 7-pole connector adds circuits such as trailer brakes. The BHP4003 gives you both in one socket on one bracket, so you can hook up either kind of trailer without an adapter.
What do reducer sleeves do?
They fill the gap when a hitch ball's shank is smaller than the hole in your ball mount, so the ball sits tight instead of rocking in an oversized hole. The lightest-rated part of your hitch still sets the limit, so check the ratings on the ball and sleeve product pages.
How do I know if my hitch ball is rated high enough?
Compare the ball's rating with your trailer's loaded weight, then with the ratings on the ball mount and receiver. Whichever is lowest is the real limit of your setup, and the truck's GCWR caps everything. Balance the trailer about 60/40 ahead of its axles so tongue weight stays inside those ratings.
