Call or Text (352) 722-5295Air bags and compressors on the 2003-2004 RAM 5.9L Cummins
The 2003-2004 Ram 2500 and 3500 ride on rear leaf springs over a solid axle, and 5.9L Cummins trucks use the American Axle 11.5 in rear. Hang a heavy trailer on the hitch or set a 5th wheel in the bed and those leaf packs give. The truck sits nose-high, steering suffers and the headlights aim too high. Air springs take up part of that load, and you set their pressure to bring the truck back to level. An onboard compressor turns that from a stop at the air hose into an adjustment you make whenever the load changes.
What we carry
Everything here is from Air Lift, and most of it builds on a set of rear air springs:
- Compressor systems: WirelessONE (25980 and 25980EZ) and WirelessAIR (74000EZ) add an onboard compressor so you can change pressure without hunting for an air hose.
- Tank kits: the WirelessONE tank upgrade kit (25981 and 25981EZ) and the WirelessAIR tank (74100EZ) add stored air. EZ part numbers are the EZ Mount versions.
- Load controllers: the Single Load Controller II (25592) runs both springs at one pressure; the Heavy Duty Dual Load Controller (25856) sets each side on its own.
- Service and setup parts: the 16192 replacement onboard compressor, 2 in and 4 in air spring spacers (52420 and 52440) for adjusting mounting height, and the LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus stainless steel upgrade (52300).
How to choose
Start with what is already on the truck. If you have air springs and fill them at a gas station, a compressor system or a load controller is the next step. If you already have a compressor and want more stored air on hand, look at the tank kits. If your onboard compressor has quit, the 16192 is a replacement unit; check the product page to confirm it matches your system. Pick a dual controller over a single when your load does not sit evenly side to side.
Fitment notes
Most of these parts are not engine-specific; the fitment questions are about your air springs and where the hardware will mount. The 3500 dually and the single-rear-wheel trucks share the 11.5 in rear axle but carry different axle ratings, so know which you have. Air springs level the truck under load; they do not change GVWR or GCWR. The door-jamb label and the lightest-rated part of your hitch still set your limits. Check each product page for compatible kits, and verify by VIN or call us with your setup.
Frequently asked questions
Will air bags raise how much my 2003-2004 Ram can tow?
No. Air springs level the truck and fix the nose-high sag, but the GVWR and GCWR on your door-jamb label stay the same. Those numbers, and the lightest-rated part of your hitch, are still the limits.
Single or dual load controller?
A single controller runs both air springs at the same pressure, which suits loads that sit centered over the axle. A dual controller sets each side separately, so you can level a truck whose load sits heavier on one side. The Heavy Duty Dual Load Controller (25856) is the dual option here.
Can I add onboard air to the air springs I already have?
Yes, that is what most of this collection is for. The WirelessONE and WirelessAIR systems add a compressor, and the tank kits add stored air on top of that. Check each product page for the air spring kits it works with before you order.
