Call or Text (352) 722-52955th wheel hitches on the 2003-2004 RAM 5.9L Cummins
A 5th wheel hitch mounts in the bed and uses a plate-and-pin system. The trailer's kingpin locks into the hitch head, and the trailer's pin box plate bears on the hitch plate. The hitch can be adjusted fore and aft to suit the trailer, which is its advantage over a fixed gooseneck ball, but it takes up bed space while it is installed. On a 2003-2004 5.9L Cummins Ram there is no factory puck system, so the rails bolt through the bed floor to the frame, and rail kits are specific to bed length and to single or dual rear wheels.
Why the hitch plate needs lube
The hitch plate is a sliding contact surface. Every time you turn, the trailer's pin box plate rotates across it under full pin weight. A slider hitch adds rails that have to move freely when you shift the hitch back for a tight maneuver. Lucas Oil 10030 5th Wheel and Slider Lube is made for both of those jobs: the plate and the slider. Follow your hitch maker's instructions for where to apply it and how often.
Getting the setup right
Pin weight sits over the rear axle, so it is the rear that sags. A loaded 2003-2004 that squats under a 5th wheel ends up nose-high, with poor steering and headlights aimed high. Balance the trailer about 60/40, with the heavier share ahead of the trailer axles, and respect the pin weight rating of your hitch. The lightest-rated part of the setup sets the limit, and the truck's GCWR on the door-jamb label caps the whole combination.
Fitment notes
Short-bed trucks are the ones to plan carefully: a 5th wheel on a short bed needs a slider or careful placement so the trailer's nose clears the cab in a tight turn. The 3500 dually and single-rear-wheel trucks share the 11.5 in rear axle but differ in axle rating and in fender and hitch clearance, so confirm SRW or DRW on any bed-mounted kit. Cab choices for these years are Regular Cab and Quad Cab. The Lucas Oil lube is not truck-specific. For hitch fitment questions, verify by VIN or call us, and browse our hitches for other towing hardware.
Frequently asked questions
Does my 2003-2004 Ram have factory 5th wheel pucks?
No. This generation has no factory puck system, so a 5th wheel hitch rides on rails that bolt to the frame through the bed floor. Buy the rail kit for your bed length and for single or dual rear wheels, and verify by VIN.
Do I need a slider hitch on a short bed?
On a short bed, a slider or careful hitch placement is what keeps the trailer's front corner off the cab when you turn sharply. If you run a slider, keep the rails lubricated so it moves when you need it; Lucas Oil 10030 is made for slider rails as well as the hitch plate.
Should I run a 5th wheel or a gooseneck on this truck?
A 5th wheel adjusts fore and aft and gives a plate-and-pin connection, but it takes up bed space. A gooseneck ball sits above the rear axle, is fixed, and leaves the bed open when you unhook. Your trailer's coupler usually makes the choice for you.
