Call or Text (352) 722-5295The CP3 on the 2003-2004 RAM 5.9L Cummins
The common-rail era for Ram heavy-duty trucks began with this engine, when Dodge swapped the problematic VP44 rotary pump for a Bosch CP3. On the 5.9L Cummins, the lift pump delivers only about 10 psi. Inside the CP3, a gear pump raises that to 80-180 psi, the fuel control actuator (FCA) meters fuel into three radial pumping chambers, and the pump delivers 300 to 1,600 bar to the rail. A cascade overflow valve lubricates the pump and returns excess fuel.
What fails and why
The FCA on the back of the CP3 can stick or fail. That causes surging, rough idle, stalling and hard starts, and it often gets misdiagnosed as injectors. TDR mentions a dose of ashless two-stroke oil temporarily masking the problem as a known field test, not a cure. The pump also depends on what feeds it. A dead lift pump will not harm the CP3 on these years, but the truck will not run, so check supply pressure before you blame the pump. The lift pump and the CP3 do different jobs, and upgrading one does not replace the other.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a street truck, the stock-replacement CP3 is the compliant choice. Stock reman pumps are cataloged for 2003-2004, and the right pick is the one that matches your injectors and lift pump, not the biggest advertised flow number. Larger-capacity parts, such as the Fleece PowerFlo 750 CP3 and dual-pump kits that add a second CP3, only make sense when the injectors and the rest of the fuel system are sized to match. Call us before you buy one and we will help you check the whole system.
What we carry
Stock-replacement CP3 pumps from Alliant Power (AP55205 reman), XDP (XD520 reman), BD Diesel (1050105 reman) and Dynomite Diesel (DDPCP3-304 reman and a brand-new CP3). From Fleece Performance Engineering: the PowerFlo 750 CP3, the 5.9L dual pump hardware kit, a dual pump bracket with mounting hardware, a spoke-design dual pump pulley, an idler pulley spacer and bolt, a junction block with rail sensor port, and an HP fuel line adaptation kit for fitting a 6.7L-style CP3 to the 5.9L. PPE Dual Fueler twin pump kits, with or without the pump, and high-pressure pumps from S&S Diesel Motorsport.
Fitment notes
Most CP3s here are listed for 2003-2007 5.9L, and the PPE Dual Fueler kits for 2003-2004. Some pumps and pump hardware are cataloged across 5.9L and 6.7L years, so read the fitment on each listing rather than assuming. Dual-pump parts are sold as separate pieces; make sure you have the bracket, pulley, idler spacer, hardware kit and junction block your setup calls for. The lift pump on a 2003-2004 is on the engine, not in the tank, which matters when you plan fuel supply for any pump. Verify by VIN or the fitment checker.
Frequently asked questions
Is the CP3 as troublesome as the VP44 before it?
Dodge brought in the Bosch CP3 for 2003 to replace the problematic VP44, and it is regarded as the more dependable pump. The things to watch on this one are the FCA on the back of the pump and keeping it fed with clean fuel.
My truck surges and stalls. Is the CP3 bad?
Not necessarily. A sticking or failed FCA causes surging, rough idle, stalling and hard starts, and it is often blamed on injectors. A dose of ashless two-stroke oil temporarily masking the symptom is a known field test for a sticking FCA, not a fix.
Will a new CP3 fix low fuel pressure from a weak lift pump?
No. A lift pump moves fuel from the tank and the CP3 builds rail pressure, and upgrading one does not replace the function of the other. The engine-mounted lift pump on these years is good for roughly 80,000-120,000 miles.
Which CP3 should I run on a street truck?
The stock-replacement pump is the compliant choice for a street truck. Reman stock CP3s from Alliant Power, XDP, BD Diesel and Dynomite Diesel all cover 2003-2004, and Dynomite also offers a brand-new unit.
