Call or Text (352) 722-5295Axles and driveline on the 2003-2004 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins
Dodge switched from Dana to AAM axles for 2003. Four-wheel-drive trucks run an AAM 9.25 in solid front axle with 33-spline shafts. In back, the 5.9L Cummins trucks use the AAM 11.5 in with 30-spline shafts, in both single- and dual-rear-wheel trucks. Factory ratios were 3.73 or 4.10, with 3.42 also listed for the 11.5. The 4.10 is the heavy-tow gear.
What fails and why
The rear differentials are not a known trouble spot. No pattern failure has been documented for the AAM rears; they are fluid-service items, and the whine or howl owners hear comes from running one low on fluid. The wear on these trucks is up front. The unit bearings and ball joints on the 9.25 solid axle carry the weight of the diesel, and they are the front-end parts owners replace most, at high mileage and sooner on larger tires. Radial play in a ball joint is not acceptable; about 1/16 in of axial play is. Clunks over bumps, wander, uneven tire wear and wobble are the signs. This collection covers the differential side: covers, hardware and gear oil.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
On most trucks the job is service, not parts. The factory schedule calls for 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic in the 9.25 front, about 2.45 qt, and 75W-90 or 75W-140 synthetic in the 11.5 rear, about 3.8 qt, on a 15,000-mile interval in severe service. If the truck tows, the usual upgrade is a finned aluminum differential cover. It adds fluid capacity and a drain and fill, which suits a towing truck running 75W-140. Past that, the strength upgrades are regearing for larger tires (one vendor example uses a 4.45 ratio to bring rpm back to stock), air lockers and axle trusses. Those are bigger jobs than what this collection carries.
What we carry

Fitment notes
Read the axle tag before ordering covers, gears or shafts. The AAM 11.5 is the Cummins rear; the 10.5 is found on gas-engine 2500s, and a used or swapped truck can differ. The Mag-Hytec cover for the 10.5 is only for a truck whose tag says 10.5. The aFe 46-70032 is a Dana 80 cover, so it only applies if your truck has a Dana 80 under it. Don't cross-reference GM 14-bolt 10.5 parts; the 11.5 ring gear is larger. Up front, the Dodge 9.25 is a different axle from GM's 9.25 independent front, so use Dodge-specific parts. Front covers apply to 4x4 trucks only. Verify by VIN if you are not sure what your truck left the factory with.
Frequently asked questions
Which rear axle is under my 2003-2004 Cummins Ram?
Cummins 2500 and 3500 trucks use the AAM 11.5 in rear with 30-spline shafts, on both single- and dual-rear-wheel trucks. The 10.5 is the gas-2500 axle. A used or swapped truck can differ, so read the axle tag before you buy.
What gear oil goes in the front and rear axles?
Diesel Hub's schedule lists 75W-90 GL-5 synthetic for the 9.25 front, about 2.45 qt, and 75W-90 or 75W-140 synthetic for the 11.5 rear, about 3.8 qt. The severe-service interval is 15,000 miles.
Is a finned aluminum differential cover worth it?
On a towing truck, it's the common upgrade. Finned aluminum covers from makers like Mag-Hytec and aFe add fluid capacity and a drain and fill, and they're aimed at towing trucks running 75W-140. On a truck that doesn't tow, the right fluid changed on schedule is the main job.
Do these rear differentials have a known failure?
No pattern failure has been sourced for the AAM rears on these trucks. Treat them as service items. A whine or howl is the sign of an axle that has been run low on fluid.
What gear ratio did my truck come with?
Factory ratios were 3.73 or 4.10, with 3.42 also listed for the 11.5 rear. The 4.10 is the heavy-tow gear. Check the axle tag to confirm before ordering gears or a cover set.
