Call or Text (352) 722-5295The oil system on the 1998.5-2002 5.9L Cummins
Every major piece of the 24-valve's oil system is on this page: the oil pan and its gasket, the pickup tube and pump screen, the engine oil pump, the oil cooler and its gasket to the block, the filter housing, the filter and the dipstick. The service spec is 12 quarts with the filter. Use SAE 15W-40 above 10 F, 10W-30 from 0 to 30 F without a block heater, and 5W-30 from -10 to 30 F with a block heater. Change it every 7,500 miles or 6 months in normal service, or every 3,750 miles under severe service such as towing. Our Cummins hub has the rest of the engine.
What leaks and why
Oil under the front of the truck is the common complaint, and it is often not a gasket. The open crankcase breather drips oil by design, and on 1998.5-2002 trucks it sits at the front of the engine, where it can push out a lot of oil on steep descents. It is often mistaken for a front axle seal leak. Dodge TSB 09-002-02 moves the breather inlet back alongside the engine to reduce oil loss on grades. The other known leak is the vacuum pump shaft seal at the back of the tandem vacuum and power-steering pump, which drips engine oil on the floor. When the leak really is lower on the engine, the oil pan gasket and oil cooler gaskets are both here.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For oil, follow the temperature chart above and buy the grade it calls for. Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil both offer 15W-40 and 10W-30 diesel oils here, in semi-synthetic, synthetic-blend and full-synthetic CK-4 versions, plus Lucas Magnum 15W-40 high-TBN CI-4. Some oils in this collection are cataloged across many engines, like the 0W-20 light-duty diesel oil and the ADRENALINE racing oils, so match the grade to this engine's chart rather than the shelf. For hardware, the Cummins genuine oil cooler, pump, pan and pickup tube are the factory parts, while Mishimoto and Alliant Power offer replacement oil coolers. Smaller upgrades include the XDP oil pan bolt kit and a Mishimoto magnetic drain plug.

Fitment notes
Read the year range in each title. The Cummins dipstick is listed for 2001-2002 only. The Mishimoto magnetic drain plug lists 1989-1993 and 2002-2013, so on this platform it is cataloged for 2002 only. The oil pan, pickup tube and pump screen are listed 1994-2002, and the filters span 1989 into the 6.7L years. A 2002 Ram 2500 or 3500 is still a second-gen truck, and 2003-up parts only fit if the listing includes your year. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a 1998.5-2002 5.9L Cummins hold?
Twelve quarts with the filter. Most of the oils here come in 1-gallon jugs, so three jugs cover a change. Check the dipstick after the fill and top off to the mark.
What weight oil should I run in Florida?
SAE 15W-40 above 10 F, which covers normal Florida temperatures. If the truck spends time up north, 10W-30 is listed for 0 to 30 F without a block heater, and 5W-30 for -10 to 30 F with a block heater.
How often should I change the oil?
Every 7,500 miles or 6 months under normal service, or every 3,750 miles under severe service. If the truck tows regularly, use the 3,750-mile interval.
Why does my truck still drip oil after I replaced the gaskets?
Check the crankcase breather at the front of the engine. It drips oil by design and can push out more on steep grades, which is often mistaken for a gasket or front axle seal leak. Dodge TSB 09-002-02 relocates the breather inlet to reduce the oil loss.
