Call or Text (352) 722-5295Drop-in turbos for the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins
The factory setup on a 12-valve Cummins is a single wastegated Holset, the HX35 on most trucks and the WH1C on some 1994s, bolted to a cast manifold with a T3 flange and exhausting into a 3-inch downpipe. It runs about 18 to 22 psi through an air-to-air intercooler. A drop-in keeps all of that hardware in place: same manifold, same downpipe. That keeps the job contained to the turbo, its gaskets and its oil connections.
What fails and why
Two different reasons put owners on this page. Some have a worn stock turbo and want factory behavior back. Others have added power and found the stock turbo's limit: in one documented case the HX35 was pushing 35 to 40 psi with the wastegate wide open and could not go further, while EGTs rose and the turbo over-sped. Before you replace anything for low power and smoke, check the intercooler boots. A slipped or split boot leaks boost and looks a lot like a tired turbo.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a stock truck, a new stock-replacement turbo is the direct path. For a towing truck with moderate upgrades, a 62 to 64mm HX35-based drop-in is the documented choice for roughly 300 to 450 hp. On a 425-hp 12-valve, a Stealth 64 kept stock-like spool, held boost in the mid-20s and kept EGT around 1,200 F while towing 11,000 lb. Past that, the next step is an S300-frame single, which needs a T4 manifold and a 4-inch downpipe and is no longer a drop-in.
What we carry
For stock replacement, XDP Xpressor new units: the XD576 for 1994-1995 trucks, and the XD562 and XD577 for 1996-1998. For more airflow on the stock manifold, Calibrated Power has the CPS200228 HX35 Stealth 64 and the CPS200125 Stealth STR, and Fleece Performance Engineering has the Cheetah HX35. We also carry the ATS Diesel Aurora 3000, 4000 and 5000 turbo systems and the Banks Power 24052 Quick Turbo System. Our turbos page shows every option across platforms.
Fitment notes
Check three things before you order. Year: the XDP units split between 1995 and 1996. Turbo tag: a 1994 may have the WH1C instead of the HX35. Engine: Dodge switched to the 24-valve in the middle of the 1998 model year, so a 1998 can be either engine; the 12-valve has the P7100 inline pump with the shutoff solenoid on top, and the 24-valve has the VP44 with a wiring harness. Several of the performance units here are listed for 1994-2002 or 1991.5-2002, so read each product page's fitment. Plan on fresh mounting gaskets for your year.
Frequently asked questions
Will a drop-in turbo fit my stock manifold and downpipe?
That is what drop-in means: it bolts to the stock T3 manifold and 3-inch downpipe. Turbos that need a T4 or T6 manifold and an HX40-style 4-inch downpipe are a different category, and the manifold and downpipe have to be ordered with them.
Which XDP replacement turbo fits my year?
The XD576 is listed for 1994-1995 trucks. The XD562 and XD577 are listed for 1996-1998. On a 1994, check the tag first, since some have the transitional WH1C.
Which drop-in makes sense for towing?
The documented towing choice is a 62 to 64mm HX35-based unit like the Calibrated Power Stealth 64. It spools like stock but moves more air, and on one 425-hp truck it held boost in the mid-20s with EGT around 1,200 F towing 11,000 lb.
