Call or Text (352) 722-5295The oil system on the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins
The 12-valve Cummins holds 12.0 US quarts with the filter. The pump pulls oil from the pan through the pickup tube and screen, and the oil runs through the engine oil cooler and the filter. The factory filter spec is the Fleetguard LF16035. Viscosity follows temperature: 15W-40 above 10 F, 10W-30 from 0 to 30 F, and 5W-30 below 0 F. The normal change interval is 6,000 miles or 6 months; severe service cuts that to 3,000 miles or 3 months.
What leaks and wears
Three oil problems are worth knowing on this engine.
- Breather tube drip. Every 5.9L Cummins through 2007 vents the crankcase to the atmosphere through a road-draft tube. On second-generation trucks the drip lands near the front differential yoke, and it has caused many needless yoke-seal replacements. A catch bottle or an extended tube keeps the oil off the axle.
- Dipstick tube. The 1994-1997 factory tube cracks at the handle and weeps oil while the engine runs. A locking braided dipstick replaces it.
- Oil cooler and gaskets. The oil cooler and its gaskets are among the usual 12-valve engine replacements stocked by Dodge-Cummins specialists.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
For a stock engine, genuine Cummins hard parts are the baseline: the oil pump, oil pan, pickup tube and oil cooler are factory parts. Alliant Power and Mishimoto offer replacement oil coolers, and Mahle covers the pump screen, pan gasket and cooler gasket set. For high-rpm builds, an 8.3L Cummins oil pump conversion gives about 42 percent more volume, but it needs an oversize pickup tube; on a stock-rpm truck, the 5.9L pump is the match.
For oil, choose by viscosity first and brand second. Between them, Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil stock 15W-40 and 10W-30 heavy-duty diesel oils in conventional, synthetic-blend and full-synthetic forms. Stabilizers and additives such as Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer, Hot Shot's TBN Booster and XDP X-Factor are extras, not a substitute for changing oil on schedule. If you are breaking in a rebuilt engine, Lucas TB Zinc Plus is the break-in additive here.
What we carry
Hot Shot's Secret covers Green Diamond, Blue Diamond and Black Diamond Outlaw diesel oils, ADRENALINE R-Series oils, TBN Booster, the FR3 friction reducer and Stiction Eliminator. Lucas Oil adds 15W-40 and 10W-30 heavy-duty diesel oils, including the Magnum High TBN 15W-40, plus heavy-duty and synthetic oil stabilizers and TB Zinc Plus. Genuine Cummins parts include the oil pump, oil pan, pickup tube, oil cooler and lower engine gasket kit. Mahle supplies the OC1001 oil filter, oil pump screen, oil pan gasket and oil cooler gasket set, and PPE offers the MicroPure XR oil filter. You will also find the Alliant Power oil cooler kit, the Mishimoto replacement oil cooler, XDP's X-Factor additive and black-phosphate oil pan bolt kit, a Dorman vacuum pump, a WCFab #10 JIC oil drain block fitting and an ATS drain plug.
Fitment notes
Hard parts here are listed by year range, and those ranges differ. The Mahle oil cooler gasket set is listed for 1989-1996, while the genuine oil cooler, pump, pan and pickup tube cover 1994-2002 or wider. Parts listed only through 1998, like the Cummins lower engine gasket kit, need the 12-valve, so on a 1998 confirm the inline P7100 pump with a shutoff solenoid on top before you order. The ATS drain plug is made for ATS pans and differential covers. Motor oils and additives are not truck-specific; pick the viscosity that matches your climate.
Frequently asked questions
How much oil does a 12-valve Cummins hold?
12.0 US quarts with the filter. The factory filter spec is the Fleetguard LF16035; the Mahle OC1001 and PPE MicroPure XR filters here are both listed for 5.9L Cummins engines that include these years.
What viscosity should I run in Florida?
15W-40. The published chart calls for 15W-40 above 10 F, 10W-30 between 0 and 30 F, and 5W-30 below 0 F, so a Florida truck runs 15W-40 year-round.
How often should I change the oil?
Every 6,000 miles or 6 months under normal service, and every 3,000 miles or 3 months under severe service. The 12.0-quart fill includes the filter.
Why is there oil on my front differential?
Check the crankcase breather tube before you replace a seal. On second-gen trucks the road-draft tube drips oil near the front differential yoke, and that drip has caused many needless yoke-seal replacements. A breather catch bottle or extended tube fixes it.
