1994-1998 Dodge 5.9L Cummins Oil Filters

Engine oil filters for the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500 with the 12-valve 5.9L Cummins. The engine holds 12 quarts with the filter, and the service schedule calls for a fresh filter at every oil change: 6,000 miles or 6 months in normal use, or 3,000 miles or 3 months under severe duty.

Oil filters on the 1994-1998 Dodge Ram 5.9L Cummins

The factory service reference for this engine is the Fleetguard LF16035 filter. The 12-valve has no engine computer at all, so there is no oil life monitor counting down for you. The odometer and the calendar are the only reminders you get, which makes a written service log worth keeping. Change the filter with the oil every time, and refill with the grade the temperature chart calls for. In Florida heat that is 15W-40.

Choosing a filter

Both filters on this page are listed by their makers to fit this engine. The PPE MicroPure XR engine oil filter carries a 1989-2024 Cummins fitment line, and the MAHLE OC1001 covers 1989-2023 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins. That wide coverage is useful if you keep a 12-valve alongside later Cummins trucks, since one filter part number can serve the whole driveway. Whichever you choose, check the year range on the listing against every truck you plan to use it on.

Fitment notes

Confirm which engine you have before ordering parts for a 1998. Mid-year trucks switched to the 24-valve, and while both filters here list fitment across that change, many other engine parts do not. The 12-valve has an inline P7100 injection pump with a shutoff solenoid on top. If you find oil under the front of the engine after a service, look at the crankcase breather tube before blaming the filter: on second-gen trucks it drips near the front differential yoke and gets mistaken for a seal leak.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I change the oil filter on a 12-valve Cummins?

With every oil change: every 6,000 miles or 6 months in normal use, or every 3,000 miles or 3 months under severe duty. Plan on 12 quarts of oil with the new filter.

What filter did the factory specify?

The service reference is the Fleetguard LF16035. The PPE and MAHLE filters on this page are listed to fit the same engine, so check each listing's year range against your truck and pick the one you prefer.

Can I use the same filter on my newer Cummins?

Often, yes. The PPE filter lists 1989-2024 Cummins and the MAHLE OC1001 lists 1989-2023 5.9L and 6.7L Cummins. Confirm the year range for your other truck before you stock up.
