Call or Text (352) 722-5295Air bags on the 1989-1993 Ram 5.9L Cummins
Air helper springs work alongside the factory leaf springs. You add air when the truck is loaded or hitched and let it back out when the bed is empty. On first-gen Rams this is the documented tow and haul upgrade, paired with a compressor so you can adjust pressure without hunting for an air hose. Some trucks also left the factory with optional overload leaf springs, which is worth knowing before you choose a kit. Before you mount brackets, check the spring perches and the frame for rust, the top inspection point on these trucks. For the rest of the platform, see the 5.9L Cummins hub.
What we carry
Everything in this collection is from Air Lift. The LoadLifter 5000 helper spring kit is the base, and the LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Plus stainless steel upgrades build on it. Air spring spacers come in 2-, 4- and 6-inch straight versions and 4- and 6-inch angled versions, with a universal air spring cradle for custom mounting. For control, choose the Single Load Controller II, the Heavy Duty Dual Load Controller, or a wireless setup: WirelessONE compressor systems and tank kits, or the WirelessAIR compressor, tank and app-only control system, several in EZ Mount versions. A replacement on-board compressor and air hose are here for service.
Fitment notes
Helper spring kits are built for specific chassis, so read the fitment on each LoadLifter listing before you order for a first-gen, and tell us whether you have a D or W truck, 250 or 350, and single or dual rear wheels. Mid-1991-and-later 250 Cummins trucks sit on 350 frames, so bracket fitment may follow the frame rather than the badge. A lifted truck changes the gap the bag has to fill, which is what the spacers are for. Verify by VIN.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a compressor with air helper springs?
Not to make them work, but it is how first-gen owners who tow and haul run them. A compressor with a controller lets you change pressure from the cab instead of filling each bag by hand. The WirelessONE and WirelessAIR systems here add a compressor and remote or app control to a helper spring kit.
Should I pick a single or dual controller?
A single controller like the Single Load Controller II runs both bags at the same pressure. The Heavy Duty Dual Load Controller sets each side separately, which helps when the load sits heavier on one side of the bed.
