2006-2007 GMC Duramax LBZ Parts & Upgrades

Parts for the 2006-2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD and Sierra 3500 with the 6.6L LBZ Duramax. GM built this engine for about a year and a half, and it is the one owners hunt for: 360 hp and 650 lb-ft on a strengthened block, cooled EGR and an oxidation catalyst, and the first Allison 1000 six-speed ever bolted to a Duramax.

Why the LBZ Sierra is the one people look for

By the time the LBZ arrived in the middle of the 2006 model year, GM had already dealt with the two things that defined the engines before it: the LB7's injectors and the LLY's restrictive turbo inlet. The LBZ got a redesigned inlet, which is why these trucks do not suffer the towing heat complaint that followed the LLY around. The block casting gained material in the bore and main-web areas with taller main caps, the forged I-beam rods were thickened, compression dropped to 16.8:1, and injection pressure rose to 26,000 psi through solenoid seven-hole injectors mounted outside the valve covers rather than under them. The turbo is the water-cooled Garrett GT3788VA variable-vane unit, with shorter vanes and a 60 mm compressor wheel in place of the LLY's larger wheel, which sharpened low-end response to suit the new six-speed. The controller is the first 32-bit E35 ECM, and the engine also picked up an intake air heater. Every one of these is a Duramax with EGR and a diesel oxidation catalyst and no particulate filter, which is the dividing line between a Sierra Classic and the LMM truck that followed.

The Allison six-speed, towing and heat

The LBZ was the first Duramax paired with the Allison 1000 six-speed: double overdrive with 3.10, 1.81, 1.41, 1.00, 0.71 and 0.61 ratios and a 4.49 reverse, and it corrected the five-speed's off-center C1 and C2 apply pistons. A 2006 Sierra could also be ordered with the ZF S6-650 six-speed manual, but that option ended with 2006, so every 2007 Sierra Classic is an Allison truck. Allison service is Dexron VI, 7.4 quarts on a drain and fill against 12.7 quarts total, with the external spin-on and the internal filter, at 50,000 miles in normal use or 25,000 in severe service. Towing is where this platform shows its soft spots, because transmission temperature tracks engine cooling: the Allison cooler sits in the same stack as the radiator, intercooler and condenser, so a tired fan clutch or a packed stack turns into rising trans temperature and gear hunting on a grade. A 2006 Sierra 2500HD is a 9,200-lb GVWR truck, and heavy towing on it wears brakes and heats the driveline faster than light-duty use does, with no platform-specific brake defect behind it.

What fails and why

Cooling and the transmission are the thread that runs through most of the repair work on a Sierra this age. The original water pump loses its impeller between roughly 80,000 and 120,000 miles, so coolant stops moving while the pump still turns: gradual overheating under load, low-coolant warnings, seepage at the weep hole. The crimped transmission cooler lines weep at the collars, sometimes as early as 40,000 to 60,000 miles, leaving red fluid along the frame rail and a transmission low enough to slip. The factory plastic surge tank seeps at the seams with age, which is why aluminum replacements exist. When a head gasket does go on one of these, it is nearly always the result of an overheat from the fan clutch, a plugged stack or the water pump, not a gasket defect, and a failed fan clutch gets misdiagnosed as a head gasket often enough to be worth saying out loud. Inside the Allison, the stamped-cover single-disc converter can distort under high load and start slipping, the C3 clutch pack is only lubricated when applied and is the first to burn, and limp mode, which locks the truck in third at maximum line pressure with P0700-series codes, usually traces to low fluid, a solenoid or internal harness fault, or the park/neutral switch on a stock truck.

The other recurring items are fuel supply, cold starts and the front end. Because the CP3 pulls fuel under suction with no factory lift pump, hardened o-rings, a leaking hand primer or porous supply lines cause long cranks after an overnight sit, a stumble under hard acceleration and P0087 or P1093; water and microbial growth settle in the separator, and Florida humidity makes draining it at every oil change a sensible habit. Glow plug failures are cumulative past 150,000 miles and the controller tends to quit all at once, with hard starts below about 40 F and P0671 through P0678 or P0380 and P0382; 2006 trucks whose glow plug module never got updated cycled the plugs hard enough to make the tips brittle. Weak batteries, corroded cable ends and poor grounds produce intermittent stumbles and hard starts that get chased as fuel problems. Up front, pitman and idler arm play is an inherent wear problem on these HD trucks, ball joints and sway bar links follow, and the front hub bearings are a wear item sold specifically for 2001-2007 trucks. Oil-soaked intercooler boots from the open crankcase vent and leaking up-pipe gaskets ahead of the turbine both show up as a truck that feels flat with higher EGT.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

On a Sierra that works for a living, the honest shopping list is OEM-grade: water pump, thermostats, fan clutch, filter head seals, up-pipe gaskets and bolt kits, and remanufactured EGR valves and coolers with fresh gaskets so the emissions hardware keeps working as designed. In Florida there is no reason to chase a higher-temperature thermostat set, since those are aimed at cold climates; the factory 180 and 185 F pair is the sensible choice. From there, the upgrades that pay are the ones that remove known weaknesses: braided stainless transmission cooler lines and a deep pan, an aluminum surge tank, a larger-core radiator if the truck tows in heat, reinforced silicone charge-air boots, and a lift pump with filtration to take the suction duty off the CP3. For the front end, pitman and idler arm support bracing, forged arms, heavy-duty tie rods and a steering stabilizer cure the washy feel, and leveling keys plus ball joint packages handle a nose-down stance; air helper springs level a loaded truck but do not raise its rated capacity. If you add power, TCM tuning has to come with the ECM tune or the Allison will limp, a billet converter and clutch work belong with anything past the stock calibration's limit, and traction bars keep wheel hop from hammering the planetary. Tuning for these trucks is calibration work on a truck that keeps its factory emissions equipment intact.

What we carry

What is listed here reflects what we replace on Sierras in the shop. Merchant Automotive and Pacific Performance Engineering carry most of the Allison 1000 and seal work: reseal kits for the converter housing, stepper motor sets, pass-through connector seals, water-in-fuel sensor o-rings, starter solenoids, coolant tank float switches, injection pump inlet hoses, PTO covers and filler caps. Fleece Performance Engineering covers injection lines, primer seal kits and coolant block-off plates, and Exergy Performance the injection side. Mahle supplies gaskets and seals such as the Y-bridge intake tube seal, Wehrli Custom Fabrication low coolant level sensors and bolt kits, and XDP flex plate bolt kits, filter wrenches and shop tools. Cooling and charge air come from Mishimoto, exhaust from MBRP mufflers, resonators and cat-back systems, driveline hardware from BD Diesel, filters from ACDelco including the TP3018 fuel filter, EGT and monitoring kits from Edge Products, and engine oil and fuel additives from Hot Shot's Secret and Lucas Oil.

Fitment notes

Every fitment question on this platform starts with Classic versus new body. A 2007 Sierra Classic is the old body and takes 2001-2007 or 2001-2010 chassis parts; a 2007 new-body Sierra HD has a different frame, suspension and sheet metal and shares essentially nothing, so a listing that says 2007 without saying Classic is usually the wrong part. Interior and exterior accessories for a Classic are the 2003-2007 parts, headlights and fog lights are the 2003-2006 and 2007 Classic parts, and tail lights are shared back through 1999 on these pickups, though cab-and-chassis and dually rear lighting can differ. Before ordering a pitman arm or a steering box, count the grooves on the sector shaft: most of these HD trucks use the 3-groove, 33-spline shaft, but 4-groove, 32-spline boxes exist on them too. Lift kits that drop the center link or the control arms are not compatible with every idler support package, so match the bracing to the lift. For towing hardware, some receivers listed for the 6.5-foot-bed 2500HD do not fit a truck that still has its factory hitch, some 2-1/2-inch Class V receivers require removing the factory hitch on an 8-foot bed, gooseneck base rails for 2001-2010 are a different kit from the 2011 and later rails with different hole positions by bed length, and 3500 cab-and-chassis trucks take their own receiver. Confirm the rear axle by its tag before ordering a cover or gear oil, since three ring-gear sizes were used across these HD trucks with different capacities, and verify the whole order against your VIN.

Common questions from Sierra owners

What does Sierra Classic mean?

It is GM's badge for the 2007 trucks still built on the older platform and sold next to the brand-new 2007 Sierra HD. Every 2007 Sierra pickup with the LBZ is a Classic. The new-body truck that arrived mid-year carries the LMM with a particulate filter, so Classic and new-body are effectively two different parts catalogs even though both say 2007 on the title.

My Sierra wanders on the highway. Where should I start?

On these trucks it is usually the steering linkage rather than the alignment. Pitman and idler arm pivots wear and develop play, described as an inherent wear problem in the steering of the 2001-2010 HD trucks, and the factory tie rods flex and let the front wheels toe in under load, which gets worse with larger tires or a lift. Wear in the intermediate shafts and ball joints adds to the feel. Brace the pitman and idler arms, step up to heavy-duty tie rods, then align it.

Will LB7 or LMM parts fit my Sierra 3500 LBZ?

Some will and some will not, which is why we ask for the VIN. Suspension parts are largely shared across 2001-2010 and exhaust manifolds are catalogued 2001-2007, but the water pump is a 2006-and-later part, up-pipes are catalogued separately for 2006-2007, the CP3 differs from the LB7 and LLY pump in regulator scaling, and injection lines are catalogued for LBZ and LMM together. Front hub bearings are a 2001-2007 part. Exhaust behind the turbo and engine calibration do not cross to the LMM at all.

What should I service on a Sierra that tows?

Keep the cooling stack and the transmission honest. Engine oil is a 10,000-mile or 12-month item, the fuel filter is a 15,000-mile item, the air filter runs to 45,000 miles, and the cooling system holds about 6.35 gallons of 50/50 Dex-Cool. Allison fluid and filters go 50,000 miles in normal use and 25,000 in severe service, and towing counts as severe. Drain the water separator at every oil change, because humidity here puts water in the tank.

Did any 2006-2007 Sierra come with a manual transmission?

Yes, in 2006 only. The ZF S6-650 six-speed manual was available alongside the Allison 1000 six-speed, and it did not carry into 2007, so every 2007 Sierra Classic with the LBZ is an Allison truck. If yours is one of the manual trucks, call before ordering driveline parts and we will check the listing against your VIN first.
