Call or Text (352) 722-5295Steering stabilizers on the 2020-2022 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The stabilizer is what Ford calls the steering linkage damper. On 4x4 trucks it rides on the solid-axle steering linkage with the pitman arm, drag link, tie rods and track bar, and it absorbs motion in that linkage. Ford treated it as the fix for shimmy: its redesigned damper is the OEM stabilizer, and on certain 2017-2019 trucks Ford extended damper coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles under Customer Satisfaction Program 20N04. Trucks built for 2020-2022 carry the later design from the factory and are not part of that program.
What fails and why
The complaint is sustained steering wheel oscillation after rough pavement or an expansion joint, typically above 45 mph, that stops when you slow down. Owners call it death wobble. On 2020-2022 trucks the reports are anecdotal. Worn linkage joints feed the oscillation the damper is meant to absorb, so a new stabilizer alone may not cure it.
Aftermarket stabilizers deserve care too. The Icon Vehicle Dynamics 2.5 Centerline kit 65050, sold for 2005-2021 F-250 and F-350 4x4 trucks, was recalled under NHTSA 20E090000 because a foam ring could block the piston ports and lock the steering. If that kit is on your truck, check its recall status.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
If your truck sits at factory height, a single replacement damper is the straightforward repair. The Bilstein B8 5100 series stabilizer (24-286558) is a single unit listed for 2017-2026 4WD trucks. Dual stabilizer kits run two dampers on the linkage, and BDS builds its kits for specific lift ranges. On a lifted truck, plan for the track bar relocation and caster correction your lift kit calls for too, since raising a 4WD Super Duty moves the axle off center and changes steering geometry. A stabilizer does not correct geometry; it only damps motion.
What we carry
BDS Suspension builds the dual-stabilizer options here: a dual steering stabilizer kit for 0-2 inches of lift, a dual kit for 2.5-9 inches, a separate dual stabilizer mounting kit for 2.5-9 inch lifts, and a dual stabilizer kit with FOX 2.0 performance shocks for 2017-2024 F-450 and F-550 trucks in 2WD or 4WD. Bilstein covers the single-damper side with the B8 5100 series stabilizer. For engine and fuel parts, head to the Powerstroke hub.
Fitment notes
Read the drivetrain and lift range in each title. The Bilstein stabilizer and the BDS lift-height kits are listed for 4WD, and 2WD Twin I-Beam trucks use different steering parts that do not interchange. The BDS kit with FOX shocks is for F-450 and F-550, not F-250 or F-350. Match the BDS kit to the lift you are running now. Verify by VIN or use the fitment checker before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Will a new stabilizer stop the shake on my 2022 F-250?
It can help, but check the linkage first. Ford's fix for shimmy was a redesigned damper, and your 2022 already has that design from the factory. Worn joints in the pitman arm, drag link, tie rods or track bar feed the oscillation, so a stabilizer alone may not cure a loose front end.
Single or dual stabilizer on a 2020-2022 Super Duty?
On a stock-height 4WD truck, the single Bilstein 5100 is the simple swap, and the BDS dual kit built for 0-2 inches of lift covers stock height up to 2 inches. For 2.5 to 9 inches of lift, use the BDS dual kit and mounting kit made for that range. The lift range in the title is the deciding spec.
I have an Icon stabilizer on my 2020 F-350. Should I worry?
If it is the Icon 2.5 Centerline kit 65050, check its recall. NHTSA 20E090000 covers that kit for 2005-2021 F-250 and F-350 4x4 trucks because a foam ring could block the piston ports and lock the steering. Contact the maker about the remedy, or replace it with a stabilizer from this collection.
