This shelf is what goes in with the oil: stabilizers and additives for the 2018-2021 Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke. The detail that trips owners up is volume. The engine takes 6.5 quarts with the filter, and anything you pour in counts toward that number, so dose by the label and finish with a cold dipstick check.

Oil for the 2018-2021 Ford F-150 3.0L

Start with what Ford lists, then decide whether to add anything. The base oil is 5W-30 API FA-4 for normal use, 5W-40 API CK-4 for severe duty such as towing, idling and stop-and-go, and 0W-40 CK-4 below -20 F. The filter is the Motorcraft FL2081 cartridge. The products on this page mix into that oil; none of them replaces it. The rest of the Ford diesel lineup is on our Power Stroke hub.

Choosing between them

  • Lucas Oil 10001 Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer: Lucas's heavy-duty stabilizer.
  • Lucas Oil 10130 Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer: the synthetic version of Lucas's heavy-duty stabilizer.
  • Lucas Oil 10063 TB Zinc Plus: labeled as an engine break-in additive, so it is aimed at break-in rather than routine top-offs.
  • XDP XD275 X-Factor: XDP's high-performance oil additive, sold in an 8 oz bottle.

All the Lucas products are on the Lucas Oil brand page. Whichever you choose, follow its label for dose and intended use.

Fitment notes

Owners report that a pan baffle holds back about 3 quarts on a gravity drain, so what drains out is not a reliable guide to what goes back in. Fill, then check the cold dipstick. If you tow, idle a lot or drive short trips in Florida heat, the schedule treats that as severe duty: CK-4 oil and changes as short as 3,000-5,000 miles for heavy use.

Frequently asked questions

Does an oil stabilizer change which oil my 3.0L needs?

No. The engine still needs oil that meets 5W-30 API FA-4 for normal driving or 5W-40 API CK-4 for severe duty. Pour the stabilizer into oil that already meets the spec, at the label dose.

How do I avoid overfilling when I use an additive?

Count the additive toward the 6.5-quart capacity with filter, then verify on a cold dipstick. Because the pan baffle can hold oil back on a drain, the dipstick, not the drain volume, is your guide.
