2018-2021 Ford F-150 3.0L Powerstroke Oil System Parts

Oil-system products for the 2018-2021 Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke. This engine holds 6.5 quarts with the filter and wants a specific oil: 5W-30 API FA-4 for normal driving or 5W-40 API CK-4 for severe duty. Get the oil right first. Everything on this shelf is meant to work alongside that spec, not in place of it.

The oil system on the 2018-2021 Ford F-150 3.0L

Ford gave the 3.0L a cast-aluminum oil pan and a two-stage oil pump to cut parasitic loss, and the block carries piston cooling jets. The filter is the Motorcraft FL2081, a cartridge style that needs a cap wrench rather than a spin-on strap. Capacity is 6.5 US quarts with the filter. Ford lists 5W-30 API FA-4 for normal driving, 5W-40 API CK-4 for severe duty, and 0W-40 CK-4 below -20 F. For parts beyond the oil system, our Power Stroke hub covers the rest of the Ford diesel lineup.

What goes wrong

Most oil trouble on this engine is service trouble. Owners report a pan baffle that traps about 3 quarts on a gravity drain, awkward drain-plug access, and that a Fumoto F107N drain valve would not fit. Overfills, underfills and dealer short-fills are a recurring forum topic, and some owners keep socket-size cheat sheets just to get through a change. The fix is procedure: fill to the 6.5-quart spec and confirm with a cold dipstick check after every change.

Normal vs. severe duty

On normal duty, follow the oil-life monitor but never go past 10,000 miles or 12 months. Moderate towing or idling drops that to 5,000-7,500 miles, with a 7,500-mile or 6-month ceiling. Heavy towing or extended idling means 3,000-5,000 miles, never past 5,000 miles or 3 months. The schedule names towing, idling and stop-and-go as severe duty, and trucks that run short trips in Florida heat belong toward the short end. The right oil, changed on the right interval, is the best upgrade this system gets.

What we carry

This collection is additives and stabilizers: Lucas Oil Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer (10001), Lucas Synthetic Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer (10130), Lucas TB Zinc Plus engine break-in additive (10063), and the XDP XD275 X-Factor High Performance Oil Additive in an 8 oz bottle. Read each label for its dose and intended use, and count any additive's volume toward the 6.5-quart capacity so you do not overfill.

Fitment notes

These additives are general-purpose products, not parts made for one engine, but the oil spec under them is specific: FA-4 or CK-4 as Ford lists. Hard parts are a different story. Filters, belts, sensors and the oil pan for the 3.0L diesel fit only the diesel, not the F-150's gas engines or the 3.0L Nano EcoBoost in other Fords. Verify by VIN when in doubt.

Frequently asked questions

What oil filter does the F-150 3.0L Power Stroke use?

The Motorcraft FL2081, a cartridge-style filter. It takes a cap wrench to service, not a strap wrench meant for spin-on filters.

Can an additive stand in for CK-4 oil when I tow?

No. The schedule requires 5W-40 API CK-4 for severe duty, and towing counts as severe duty. An additive goes into oil that already meets the spec; it does not change what the engine needs.

How often should I change oil if I tow with my F-150 diesel?

For moderate towing or idling, every 5,000-7,500 miles, never past 7,500 miles or 6 months. For heavy towing or long idling, every 3,000-5,000 miles, never past 5,000 miles or 3 months.
