Charging and starting parts for the 2018-2021 Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke live here. Before you buy anything for a hard-starting diesel F-150, know that the battery, glow plugs and glow-plug module on this V6 are their own parts, and a new battery is not finished until the Battery Management System knows it is there.

Charging and starting parts for the 2018-2021 Ford 3.0L Power Stroke

Here are the factory numbers worth writing down. The battery is a Motorcraft BAGM-49H8-850, an AGM in the H8 / Group 49 size with 850 cold cranking amps. The glow plugs are Motorcraft ZD22, one per cylinder, fired by a pulse-width-modulated glow-plug control module. Owner reports say the BMS has to be registered after any battery replacement. These are F-150 parts only, since the 3.0L never went into a Super Duty. The full Power Stroke catalog covers the engine's other systems.

What to check before you buy

Owner reports and the recall record point to three things, and none of them is solved by grabbing a part off the shelf:

  • Battery age. Owners report replacing the factory AGM at around five to six years.
  • BMS registration. A replacement that was never registered can cause slow cranking, Start-Stop that won't engage and BMS warnings.
  • Recall 19V805. On certain 2019-2020 trucks, a fastener at the positive terminal can loosen and cause a flickering cluster, loss of assist or a stall. Check the VIN before diagnosing random electrical dropouts.

What we carry

This collection currently stocks Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid (11238), a starting aid. It is handy to have on the shelf, but it is not a substitute for a healthy battery and glow-plug system. Follow the directions on the can. If the truck needs help to start, something on the charging or glow-plug side needs a look. For battery or glow-plug questions, call the shop and we will help you sort out the right Motorcraft number at no charge.

Fitment notes

Do not cross-shop glow-plug parts by the Power Stroke name. The 3.0L's ZD22 plugs and control module are unique to this engine, and the 6.7L Super Duty uses a different set. For batteries, stay with an AGM in H8, or an H6 or H7 size the BMS supports. Verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

What glow plugs does the 3.0L Power Stroke take?

Motorcraft ZD22, one per cylinder. They are controlled by a pulse-width-modulated glow-plug control module that is also specific to the 3.0L, so 6.7L parts are not a substitute.

Does a new battery need to be programmed on the diesel F-150?

Yes, according to owner reports. The Battery Management System should be reset or registered with the new battery's size, H6, H7 or H8, so its charge strategy matches. Skip that step and you can see slow cranking and Auto Start-Stop that refuses to engage.

Why does my diesel F-150 say Auto Start-Stop is unavailable?

Owners report that short trips and frequent Start-Stop cycling keep the AGM from reaching a full charge, which brings low state-of-charge and start-stop unavailable messages. An unregistered replacement battery can do the same. Leave the battery monitoring sensor connected so the BMS can manage the charge.

Will a starting aid fix a hard start on my 3.0L?

It is not a fix. On this truck, the reported causes of slow cranking are an aged AGM and a battery that was never registered with the BMS. Sort those out first, and keep the starting fluid as a shelf item.
