Call or Text (352) 722-5295Charging and starting on the 2018-2021 Ford 3.0L Power Stroke
Ford built the 3.0L Power Stroke for the F-150 only, from the 2018 model year through 2021, and never offered it in a Super Duty. The starting system looks simple. A single Group 49 (H8) AGM battery, Motorcraft BAGM-49H8-850 rated at 850 cold cranking amps, does the cranking. Every cylinder gets its own glow plug, Motorcraft ZD22, and a pulse-width-modulated glow-plug control module runs them. Auto Start-Stop is standard on the diesel. Ford's Battery Management System (BMS) monitors the AGM and sets the charge strategy to match the battery it has been told is installed. That last part is what trips owners up. The BMS is not a passive gauge; it needs to know what battery is in the truck. For the rest of the engine, start at our Power Stroke parts.
What fails and why
The trouble reported on this system is electrical, not mechanical. Owners report the factory AGM lasting about five to six years. When a replacement goes in and nobody registers it with the BMS, the symptoms are slow cranking, Auto Start-Stop that stays inhibited, and BMS warnings on the dash. Owners also report that short trips and constant Start-Stop cycling keep the AGM from ever reaching a full charge, which shows up as a low state of charge and start-stop unavailable messages.
There is a recall to know about, too. NHTSA campaign 19V805 covers certain 2019-2020 F-150s where the fastener holding the Power Distribution Box 12V cable and the Battery Monitoring System eyelets to the positive terminal can loosen. The result can be a flickering instrument cluster, loss of brake or steering assist, or an engine stall. Check your VIN for that recall before you chase random electrical dropouts with parts.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
On this truck, the best battery upgrade is a correct replacement. Stay with an AGM in the factory H8 / Group 49 size, or an H6 or H7 that the BMS supports, and have the BMS reset or registered so the charge strategy matches the new battery. Owner consensus is that lithium is off the table, because this BMS has no lithium setting. If you want Auto Start-Stop off for a drive, use the dash button Ford provides; it switches the feature off for that drive cycle. Leave the battery monitoring sensor plugged in, because the BMS needs that signal to keep charging correctly.
Glow plugs and the glow-plug module are a stock-replacement job, not an upgrade. The ZD22 plug and the 3.0L control module are unique to this engine. The 6.7L Super Duty uses a different set even though both engines wear the Power Stroke name.
What we carry
This collection currently holds Lucas Oil Sure Start starting fluid, part 11238, a starting aid. Treat it as a shelf item, not a repair. If your 3.0L cranks slowly or is slow to light, the battery's age, its BMS registration and the glow-plug system are the places to look, and a can of starting fluid will not fix any of them. Follow the directions on the can, and if you are unsure whether a starting aid suits your situation, call the shop first. If you need help matching a battery or glow-plug number to your truck, that call is free.
Fitment notes
The 3.0L Power Stroke only went into the F-150, 2018 through 2021, and never into a Regular Cab. The 2018-2020 trucks are the 13th-generation F-150 after its 2018 refresh; the 2021 trucks are the first year of the 14th generation, with the diesel carried over unchanged. Electrical parts that fit a gas F-150 or a 6.7L Super Duty are not automatically right for this engine, and glow-plug parts in particular are 3.0L-specific. Verify by VIN, read the group size off the old battery before you shop, and if your truck is a 2019 or 2020, check for open recall 19V805.
Frequently asked questions
What battery does the 2018-2021 F-150 3.0L Power Stroke use?
The factory battery is a single Motorcraft BAGM-49H8-850, an AGM in the Group 49 / H8 size rated at 850 cold cranking amps. Replace it with an AGM in the same size, or an H6 or H7 the Battery Management System supports. Then have the BMS reset so it charges the new battery correctly.
Can I put a lithium battery in my 3.0L F-150?
Owner consensus says no. The BMS on this truck is set up for AGM batteries in the H6, H7 and H8 sizes and has no lithium setting. Stick with an AGM.
Why won't Auto Start-Stop work after I replaced the battery?
The usual reason owners report is that the BMS was never told about the new battery. An unregistered replacement can bring slow cranking, Start-Stop that stays inhibited and BMS warnings. Have the BMS reset or registered for the new battery's size, and give the truck some longer drives, since owners report short trips keep the AGM from fully charging.
My 2019 F-150 diesel flickers the cluster and stalled once. Is there a recall?
There may be. NHTSA recall 19V805 covers certain 2019-2020 F-150s where the fastener at the positive battery terminal, which holds the Power Distribution Box cable and the battery monitoring eyelets, can loosen. Symptoms include a flickering cluster, loss of brake or steering assist, and stalling. Run your VIN through NHTSA before replacing parts.
Do 6.7L Power Stroke glow plugs fit the 3.0L?
No. The 3.0L uses Motorcraft ZD22 glow plugs, one per cylinder, with its own pulse-width-modulated control module. The 6.7L Super Duty uses a different set despite the shared Power Stroke name.
