Call or Text (352) 722-5295The torque converter on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Every 6.7L in this run uses Ford's 6R140 TorqShift, a six-speed automatic rated to 1,400 lb-ft of input torque, with SelectShift, Tow/Haul and converter lockup down to about 900 rpm. Ford gave it a high-capacity torque converter in 2015, and that converter carries through 2019. The 6R140 is considered durable at stock power behind the 6.7L Powerstroke, and converter shudder is one of its main complaints.
What fails and why
Torque converter clutch degradation shows up as shudder or vibration at steady cruise, rpm flare under load and lazy lockup. It is worst on tuned or heavily loaded trucks and at higher mileage. Converter slip also feeds heat, and overheating under heavy towing is a documented 6R140 complaint. Rule out the look-alikes before you buy: valve-body bore wear, sticky solenoids and solenoid-pack faults cause harsh, erratic or delayed shifts. And after Ford's TSB 18-2278 PCM reflash, firmer shifts for several days are normal while the adaptive strategy relearns.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
On a stock truck with normal duty, a factory-style converter is a fair choice. If the truck tows heavy or makes more than stock power, that is exactly where the shudder pattern is worst, which is the case for a performance converter built for the 6R140.
What we carry and fitment
This page carries the BD Diesel 1030238 Proforce 4D 6R140 torque converter and the ATS Diesel Performance Five Star performance torque converter. Both are listed for 2011-2019 6.7L trucks with the 6R140. The 2020 and newer Super Duty uses the 10R140 ten-speed and does not take these. Refill with MERCON LV, never the MERCON ULV that the 10R140 uses.
Frequently asked questions
What does torque converter shudder feel like on a 6R140?
A shudder or vibration at steady cruise, rpm flare under load, or lockup that feels lazy. It is worst on tuned or heavily loaded trucks and at higher mileage. Have codes and fluid checked before you buy, since valve-body and solenoid faults cause erratic shifting too.
Will a converter for a 2020 Super Duty fit my 2019?
No. 2017-2019 trucks use the 6R140 six-speed, and Ford switched to the 10R140 ten-speed for 2020. Buy a converter listed for the 6R140, like the BD and ATS units here, both catalogued for 2011-2019.
