2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Steering Parts

This page collects steering parts for the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 Super Duty with the 6.7L Powerstroke: stabilizers, a drop pitman arm, a power steering pump, fluid and alignment hardware. The one thing to know about this generation is the highway wobble after a bump, and Ford's 20N04 program aimed squarely at the steering linkage damper.

Steering on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

Every 2017-2019 Super Duty steers through a hydraulic power-assisted recirculating-ball gear with a damper on the steering linkage. On a 4x4, the gear swings a pitman arm that moves the drag link and tie rods across the solid Monobeam front axle. The 4x2 F-250 and F-350 ride on Twin-I-Beam instead. Adaptive Steering, a variable-ratio system, was optional on Lariat and up and standard on Limited. Ford fills the system with Mercon LV. One thing that confuses owners who tow: trailer sway control and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control act through the brakes, not the steering, so those are not systems you fix with steering parts. For the rest of the engine and chassis, start at our Powerstroke hub.

What fails and why

The complaint that defines this generation is steering wheel oscillation, the shake owners call death wobble. It starts after a bump at speeds above about 45 mph and comes through the wheel hard until you slow the truck down. Reports begin around 10,000 miles, and 2019 complaints average about 18,750 miles. Ford responded with Customer Satisfaction Program 20N04, tied to TSB 19-2392: a redesigned steering linkage damper, with coverage extended to 7 years or 100,000 miles. The damper swap is rated as a 0.4-hour job. The program covers 4x4 F-250 and F-350 trucks plus all F-450 and F-550; 4x2 Twin-I-Beam trucks are not included.

A new damper does not always end it. Some owners report the wobble coming back when the real cause is worn front-end parts or an alignment that is off on caster, and one 2017 owner called the damper a band-aid. Those reports are anecdotal, but they are a good reason to inspect the whole front end instead of only the damper.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

If your truck is still inside the 20N04 window, talk to a Ford dealer first. The redesigned OE damper is the factory fix, and the same part is sold as an OE replacement after the program. Outside that window, the common owner-reported fix is an aftermarket dual steering stabilizer kit, done together with an alignment. In 2019 wobble complaints, a dual stabilizer kit is the aftermarket fix owners mention most. Lifted trucks are their own case: lifts of 4 inches and up on this platform include steering or drag-link correction such as a drop pitman arm.

What we carry

From BDS Suspension you will find dual steering stabilizer kits for 0-2 inch and 2.5-9 inch lifts, the dual stabilizer mounting kit for 2.5-9 inch lifts, a 5 inch drop pitman arm for lifted 4WD trucks, and a dual stabilizer kit with FOX 2.0 performance shocks for the F-450 and F-550. Bilstein adds the B8 5100 Series steering stabilizer, part 24-286558, listed for 2017-2026 4WD trucks. On the hydraulic side there is the XDP XD729 power steering pump, sold new with a pulley for 2017-2022, and Lucas Oil 10823 power steering fluid. BD Diesel covers the alignment end of the job with the 1032103 cam adjuster kit.

Fitment notes

Most stabilizer kits and the pitman arm here are 4WD parts. The 4x2 F-250 and F-350 use a different front suspension, so read the drivetrain listed in each title. Stabilizer kits are sold by lift height; match the kit to the lift actually on your truck. The FOX-equipped BDS kit is listed for the F-450 and F-550, not the F-250 or F-350. If your truck has Adaptive Steering, it uses a different steering wheel and column module, so confirm that before ordering column-related parts. Check any fluid against Ford's Mercon LV spec before you top off. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ford still cover the wobble fix on my 2017-2019 Super Duty?

Program 20N04 (TSB 19-2392) extended steering linkage damper coverage to 7 years or 100,000 miles on 4x4 F-250 and F-350 trucks and on all F-450 and F-550. Whether your truck is still inside that window depends on its in-service date and mileage. A Ford dealer can check by VIN. 4x2 trucks are not part of the program.

Will a steering stabilizer alone stop death wobble?

Sometimes. Dual stabilizer kits are the most common owner-reported fix, but a stabilizer damps the shake; it does not repair worn parts. Owners report the wobble returning when front-end wear or caster is the root cause. Pair the stabilizer with a front-end inspection and an alignment.

Should I run a single or dual steering stabilizer?

The Bilstein B8 5100 is a single stabilizer for 2017-2026 4WD trucks. The BDS kits run two and come in versions for 0-2 inch and 2.5-9 inch lifts, plus a FOX 2.0 version for the F-450 and F-550. Dual kits are what most owners chasing wobble went with; a single is the simpler like-for-like swap.

What power steering fluid does a 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke take?

Ford specifies Mercon LV, filled between the max and min lines. Read the label on any fluid, including the Lucas Oil fluid listed here, against that spec before you add it. If the pump itself is the problem, the XDP XD729 comes new with a pulley.

Do I need a drop pitman arm?

Only on a lifted 4x4. Lifts of 4 inches and more on this platform include steering or drag-link correction, such as a drop pitman arm. The BDS 5 inch drop pitman arm in this collection is a 4WD part.
