Call or Text (352) 722-5295Short and long blocks for the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
The factory block is compacted graphite iron with a deep skirt, topped by aluminum reverse-flow heads on six bolts per cylinder. The 2017-2019 long block is the aluminum-piston, 16.2:1 compression version, and those pistons are oil-cooled. For 2020, Ford went to short-skirt forged steel pistons, 15.8:1 compression and longer rods, so 2017-2019 pistons and rods are a different part set from 2020 and later. The 2015 update carried into these years also brought IROX-coated lower main bearings and a heavier crank damper. Ford gives the 6.7L a B10 life rating of 500,000 miles at the 330 hp commercial rating. See our full Powerstroke lineup for the parts that go around the block.
What fails and why
At stock power, the bottom end of the F-250 and F-350 6.7L is not a known weak point. Rod failure shows up only on heavily tuned trucks. DrivingLine puts the factory rods at roughly 650 rwhp reliably and on borrowed time above 700 rwhp, with the aluminum pistons part of that same ceiling. Head-gasket failure is not a known pattern either. That makes a short block a build part or a repair after major damage, not a wear item you plan around.
Stock replacement vs. upgrade
A stock-type block puts the truck back where it was. A built short block makes sense when the plan is more power than the aluminum pistons and stock rods were meant to carry. If you go that route, plan the top end at the same time: DrivingLine recommends stiffer valve springs and chromoly pushrods above roughly 700 rwhp, and says the stock heads are adequate below that.
What we carry
This collection carries the SPE Motorsport S100241 OE+ Short Block, catalogued for 2011-2023 6.7L Powerstroke engines. SPE also makes valve springs, chromoly pushrods, titanium retainers and a billet oil pump gear for this engine, which you will find in our engine components collection, so the block and the matching build parts can come from one maker. Read the product listing for exactly what the OE+ block includes and what transfers from your old engine.
Fitment notes
Factory 2017-2019 and 2020-and-later blocks differ in pistons and compression, so replacement blocks are year-specific. The SPE block's listing spans both designs, so read its piston and compression details and call us before ordering. The parts around the block also split at 2020: crank, rods, injectors, lift pump location, turbo and transmission. Chassis cabs run a 330 hp calibration and a different turbo than pickups, so tell us which you have. Verify by VIN, and by build date near the 2019/2020 changeover.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 2020-2022 short block fit my 2018 F-350?
Not as a factory swap. 2020 and later engines use forged steel pistons, 15.8:1 compression, longer rods and a new crank, while 2017-2019 is the aluminum-piston, 16.2:1 version. Match the block to your model year, or confirm with us that an aftermarket block covers your truck.
How long should a stock 6.7L Powerstroke bottom end last?
Ford's B10 life rating for the 6.7L is 500,000 miles at the 330 hp commercial rating. At stock power the rods and pistons are not a known weak point.
How much power will the stock pistons and rods take?
DrivingLine says about 650 rwhp reliably, with anything above 700 rwhp on borrowed time. If your goal is past that, a built bottom end belongs in the plan.
