2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke Cold Air Intakes

Cold air intakes and intake systems for the 2017-2019 Ford F-250, F-350 and F-450 with the 6.7L Powerstroke. The Banks Ram-Air 41890 and the S&B 75-5085 are the intakes with documented 50-state CARB EO numbers for these years. If your truck has to pass an emissions inspection, start your search with those.

Cold air intakes on the 2017-2019 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke

From the factory, air enters a driver-side airbox and runs to the Garrett GT3788V turbo in the engine valley, with the CCV hose joining the inlet just ahead of the compressor. An aftermarket intake replaces the airbox, filter and inlet tube on that stretch. That CCV hose is part of the factory emissions equipment; it carries crankcase vapor into the compressor inlet, so whichever kit you choose, connect it to the new inlet tube the way the kit's instructions show. Everything else for this engine is on our Powerstroke hub, and you can compare across platforms under intakes.

What fails and why

On the inlet side, the job is mostly maintenance. Ford's air filter interval is 45,000 miles on normal service, with an inspection at every oil change under severe service. Oil in the inlet tube or across the intake tract is a CCV sign: when the separator is overdue, oil mist coats the intake and the charge air cooler, and the CCV is a 30,000 to 40,000-mile service. Downstream of the turbo, the factory plastic cold-side pipe is the part known to break, with sudden boost loss, a loud hiss and limp mode. If you are adding an intake to a truck that tows or runs a tune, look at that pipe at the same time.

Stock replacement vs. upgrade

The Banks Power Ram-Air 41890 is an enclosed housing that draws air from the hood scoop and from under the battery. It fits the F-250, F-350 and F-450, keeps the stock battery location, showed 49% more mass airflow on the bench, and carries CARB EO D-161-132. The S&B 75-5085 is a fully enclosed snap-lid box rated at 57% more flow than stock, with CARB EO D-590-46 for the F-250 and F-350. Both give you a filter choice: Banks oiled or dry, S&B cleanable cotton or dry extendable. For any other kit, find the EO number on the product page before installing it on a truck that has to pass a California or emissions inspection.

Fitment notes

Intakes are year-split on this truck. Ford revised the 6.7L for 2020 and intakes are catalogued 2017-2019 or 2020-up, so a kit for a 2020-2022 Super Duty is not a match unless its listing includes your year. The S&B 75-5085 physically fits the F-450 and F-550, but its CARB EO does not cover them; Banks lists the F-450 on the 41890. Chassis cabs (F-350, F-450 and F-550) run a 330 hp calibration and a GT3582V turbo, and many parts differ from the pickups. When in doubt, verify by VIN.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cold air intake emissions legal on a 2017-2019 6.7L Powerstroke?

It depends on the kit. The Banks Ram-Air 41890 carries CARB EO D-161-132 and the S&B 75-5085 carries CARB EO D-590-46, which makes them 50-state legal on the trucks their EOs cover. For anything else, look for the EO number on the product page before installing on a truck that gets an emissions inspection.

Will an intake for a 2020 Super Duty fit my 2019?

Do not assume it will. Ford revised the 6.7L for 2020, and intakes are catalogued 2017-2019 separately from 2020-up. The Banks 41890, for example, is a 2017-2019 part. Order by the year range on the listing.

Can I run the Banks or S&B intake on an F-450?

Banks lists the F-450 for the Ram-Air 41890. The S&B 75-5085 physically fits the F-450 and F-550, but its CARB EO does not cover those trucks, so it is not the right pick if your F-450 has to pass an emissions inspection.

What else should I do when I install a new intake?

Reconnect the CCV hose to the new inlet tube exactly as the kit's instructions show, since it routes crankcase vapor into the turbo inlet as part of the factory emissions equipment. While you are in there, check for oil in the inlet tube, which points to an overdue CCV separator. Then follow the kit maker's filter service guidance for its oiled or dry element.
