Call or Text (352) 722-5295Bumper towing on the 2015-2016 Ford 6.7L Powerstroke
Ford picked the rear receiver on these trucks by wheelbase and model, so two F-250s side by side can carry different hitches:
- 12.5K, 2-inch: SRW diesels on the 137- or 142-inch wheelbase.
- 14K, 2.5-inch: SRW diesels on the 156-, 158- or 172-inch wheelbase.
- 15K, 2.5-inch: DRW trucks on the 156- or 158-inch wheelbase.
- 18.5K (2015) or 19K (2016), 2.5-inch: the F-350 DRW 172-inch diesel and the F-450.
The 2.5-inch receivers come with a 2-inch reducer sleeve, and a 7-/4-pin trailer connector is standard at the bumper. On a 2016, the rear camera adds dynamic hitch assist to help you line up. The 6.7L Powerstroke makes 860 lb-ft in these years; the receiver label, not the engine, sets your bumper-pull limit.
Picking the right ball mount
Match the shank to the receiver first: 2-inch or 2.5-inch on a stock truck. B&W also lists 3-inch shank mounts; those need a 3-inch receiver, which is not what Ford fitted to these trucks. Then pick the drop. With the truck on level ground and the trailer sitting level, measure from the ground to the top of the receiver opening and from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler. The difference is your drop. A level trailer tows straighter and loads its axles evenly. When tongue weight squats the rear and lightens the front end, a weight distribution hitch spreads that load forward; air springs level the rear but do not move weight to the front axle.
What we carry
B&W Trailer Hitches Tow & Stow adjustable ball mounts come in 2-, 2.5- and 3-inch shanks with drops from 2.5 to 9 inches, in standard, pintle and MultiPro/MultiFlex versions. See more on our hitches page.
Fitment notes
Know your wheelbase before you order, since it sets the receiver size and rating. The Big Hitch receivers are listed for 1999-2016 Super Duty Powerstroke trucks; the roll-pan version is for trucks running a roll pan in place of the rear bumper. A hitch setup is only as strong as its lowest-rated piece: receiver, sleeve, ball mount, ball or pin. Check every label and use the lowest number. Verify by VIN when in doubt.
Frequently asked questions
What size receiver does my 2015-2016 Super Duty have?
A 2-inch 12.5K receiver if it is an SRW diesel on the 137- or 142-inch wheelbase. Everything else got a 2.5-inch receiver rated 14K, 15K, or 18.5K to 19K depending on wheelbase, SRW or DRW, and model.
Can I use a 2-inch ball mount in a 2.5-inch receiver?
Yes, with the 2-inch reducer sleeve Ford supplies with the 2.5-inch receivers. The setup is limited by its lowest-rated part, so check the ratings on the sleeve and the mount against your trailer.
Do I need a weight distribution hitch?
If tongue weight makes the rear squat and the front go light on a bumper-pull trailer, it is the right tool. It spreads that weight forward instead of leaving it all on the rear axle. Check the rating on the hitch and on your receiver before you hook up. B&W's WDHK4500 is on this page.
What is the roll-pan hitch for?
Big Hitch Products BHP20015 is a hidden 2.5-inch receiver that mounts behind a roll pan, for trucks that run a roll pan in place of the rear bumper. It is listed for 1999-2016 Powerstroke Super Duty trucks.
